tL . jmiaes ho woulj have beeu
lead to believe that President Cleve
land could double the yield of po
tatoes by Hpecial proclamation, briny
rain out of cloudless nkien, nud turn
this country into a vale of paradise.
A year's experience lias shown us
that he cannot do more than any
other ordinary man who holds the
reins over an ungovernable team,
lie iniht have done better had he
not been hampered by the disen
tions in party, which i- c imposed
of strange eleiuent-, uu-.l ho soon
found that although he. had a clear
track and a skilled hand he could
not drive where he wanted. His
weather bulletin indicated clear
weather and sunny skies, and his
first proclamation was full of hope
and promise. Soon u cloud loomed
up in the Western horizon. It was
the Free Trade plank in the Chicago
platform. The cloud grew larger
and larger and soon obscured the
sun. A terrible storm was impend
ing and soon burst with terrible fury
over the land. It put out the fires
in tho furnaces, shut down the fac
tories and carried desolation into
millions of homes. Tho President
drove for shelter. lie saw the Sher
man silver shed and started for it,
but tho team balked, and when al
most under its sheltering roof backed
him out again.
This is tho history of tho extraor
dinary session of Congress, which
will end in a compromiso if nothing
worse, and after tho storm is over
and tho w indy harvest garnered, you
will find tho administration sitting
on top of a stubble, like an inch
worm, feeling in every direction for
auother placo to land.
The people have done with this
foolishness and will all go back to
their lirst love.
Dit.loy.ilty to Le no Bar.
Jlr. G iles of Alabama has ollert d
a bill in Congress repealing that por
tion of tho pension law which re
quires that nn applicant for pension,
prove that he was loyal to tho Gov
ernment during the Rebellion. Tbe
Houne Judiciary Committee has re
ported thi bill favorably and we
may now expect that it will be rail
roaded through under Speaker
Crisp's recent rulings. This is a
thoroughly infamous law. The man
who cannot prove his loyalty during
the period of the Rebellion should
never receive a peusion. What is
tho meaning of this net anyhow f Is
it the price the late Southern Briga
diers demanded of tho Democracy
for furnishing 150 members of Con
gress, who will always be Democrat
ic T Is it a scheme to put Souther
ners on tho pension rolls T With a
Georgian like iloke Smith in control
of pensions, and tho repeal of the
loyalty test, it may bo expected that
tho pension roll will grow rapidly
with the names of soldiers who for
a portion of their servico wore the
gray uniform. Will Northern sol
diers, who have shown their iudig
nation when their comrades were
dropped from tho pension rolls,
tolerate a policy that proposes to
substitute for them the names of
disloyal men ?
Hoke 'mith points with pride to
the fact that he has I educed the
pension estimate !?.",imki,(HiO. The
old soldieis who have had their pen
sious taken and are thrown out upon
the charity of a cold Woild do not
enjoy tho sight of Iloke looking
proud over their misery. When tho
change in administrations is made,
and the Republican party is again in
power, the old soldier will again come
into his own, not before.
