Bicycles were invented as a toy.
Gun powder wan first made with
view to making a noise. Out of gun
powder grew more of tho equal
rights of mau than sprung frota any
other one thing or influence. Now
tho inventing of bicycles may not be
of as great importance an the mak
ing of gun powder, but it has already
gone fr beyond the expectations of
its promotors. It is the leading in
fluence iu the movement for good
roads and streets. Bicyclo makers
and bicycle riders are vitally inter
ested in smooth highways. They
have agitated tho subject. Most of
the recent literature on the subject
of good roads and how to miike
them, if not directly from bicycle
men is directly called forth through
their efforts. As the patents expire
bicycles will become cheaper, there
will bo more makers and more riders
and tho road improvement agitation
will grow faster and extend farther.
