which, but for our pains, would have
remained eoiiip)omisin.L,'ly blurred
forever.
Tin; period of mental development
in infancy and early childhood can
also very nppiopi iat ly be compared
to the building of the foundation of
ft house. If the stones laid in the
found. .lion-wall in e put in i .lace by
an amateur, or by an inexperienced
mason, the wall when complete will
bo Himply nn heterogeneous and eon
Klomerate mass without any qual
ities of recommendation either orna
mental or useful ; nml though even
skilled mechanics are employed in
erecting the superstructure uceord
intto the most Hcientitic and sub
Btautial principleH of architecture,
tho contrast will ho most Ktrikintf,
and tho whole building will in n
bhort timo disiutetrrate and crumble
in thaoH. Thu it is with tho youth
ful mind. The namo principles that
dominnto and govern tho building of
tho foundation. wall of a hoiiHo, ap
ply with equal force, though with
infinitely greater reHponsibility, to
tho logical development of tho mind
during childhood.
And again, when n man has con
tracted a disease which in its nature
is of a mild and non-malignant char
acter, ho may bo content to rocoiyo
the attention and proscriptions of
an ordinarily skilled physician j but
when the disease is complicated and
malignant in form and character,
then he will employ ercry means to
secure medical aid of the highest or
der. Now mark the force of this
fiimilo. Tho mind in childhood is
frail, weak, eusceptiblo to all im
preHsions whether good or bad, is
yearning nnd striving, for tho light
of intelligence. This condition
therefore is analogous to tho man
seriously afllictod with disease and
needing the services of him most
profoundly learned and experienced
in the eurativo art, tho mont thor
oughly equipped and competent
teacher, for the present purposes.
As the years eomo and go, however,
the child-mind will develop logically
and grow strong under the instruc
tion and guidance of his modi 1 ex
emplar, until ho arrives at tho ago of
Ifii or twelve years, when in nil hu
man probability his mind will have
been made proof ngainst illogical
and adverse development. And if
from this time on the mind, by rea
son of falling in the hands of false
and incompetent teachers, should
become tarnished in a greater or
less degree, it would require but a
slight suggestion from the voice of
the true teacher btowed away in the
faculty of recollection, to cause the
subject to recoil und once again
tread the paths of virtue and the
pursuits of intelligent development
never perhaps to depart therefrom.
This latter condition will follow
from the treatment prescribed by an
ordinarily skilled physician, teach
er, for a mil. I disi ase easily cured,
the mind of a child after ten or
twelve years of age. If these views
and comparisons are correct, and
who dare call them in question.
then how great must be the respon
sibilty of those who undertake the
instruction of our children ! Yet we
often hear it said, "Almost anybody
can teach the little ones." (?) Ah,
what a mistake ! How supremely
criminal is such an idea ! blotter
let it be said that almost any one
can teach the older ones, for their
mental, moral and physical existence
is more permanently fixed and
moulded, ami the damage to be done
will be only in proportion. We be
lievs that facts will warrant the con
clusion, that out of every hundred
teachers in our schools to-day, only
one can be found qualified in every
respect to teach pupils from the age
of six to twelve years ; whilst many
may bo found amply qualified to
teach the high schools. This may
seem a paiadox to many persons.
Jmt it is nevertheless a fact founded
,in truth and expeiieiice. ToiVueh

sto.ved upon securing tho best
teaching talent for our primary
schools.
In view of tho above, therefore,
it would follow as nlogical sequence,
in point if compensation of teachers,
that if a Hoard of education desires
to employ three teachers, for in
stance, at a m ml lily salary (if.7."),
Mnu and SI-'", respect iv ly, th" fob

unprecedented in this section of the
State, though it is adopted in the
most enlightened localities; and
wherever these principles are recog
nized and put in execution they will
prove an eternal blessing to both
parents and children.

Slci-jrliitie; has been tine the last
few days and the youuj; folks are
taking advantatre of it too.... On
Wednesday evening the Mite Society
of the V. 15. church favored us with
something splendid in tho form of a
patriotic entertainment. Tho pro
gram was complete, and its arrange
ment is characteristic of their ex
iuisite tasto of what is entertaining.
The singing by Misses Martin,
Hoover and Houtz and tho recita
tion by Miss Dora liurns on the bur
ial of Moses, arc truly worthy of
comment, whilo speeches made by
Hev. Lchr nnd Supt. Hoffman did
much to excito n burning love for
our country. Tho children, too, did
exceedingly well, nnd to sny tho least
it was a superb exhibition. .. .We
noticod in tho Tost of a few weeks
ago that our county-seat is afllictod
with nn unknown lotter dropper.
Now we are bothered with the same
kind of nuisance, who is distribut
ing scandalous letters. He must in
deed be a miserable creature who
noods resort to such latent- means
of accusing his fellow boing, and I'll
wager that the accusod will deal
straight-forwardly. with him should
ho fail to preserve his incognito.

Yes; busy as a bee in clover time.
Such has been the case this fall with
GARMAN, THE SHOE-MAN,
whose superior line of Boots & Shoes
and low prices have brought him
such an immense trade that he is
kept busy day and night waiting on
his customers. Just come and see
his stock and learn his prices and
you will appreciate the aptness of
the comparison between him and
the busy oee.
