"My ilear, there are no children,"
was the answer. "They have lieen

that they were dead. They are as

A few evenings utter my friend
called on me.
"I'ut on your hat," she said, "and
we w ill yo and see old Mrs. Martin.
You'll understand better then about
her delusion."
Ina tiny house of a couple of
rootns we found her, and, stepping
hoftly up to the door, heard a voice
within talking cheerily.
"Yes, you've been good children
to-day, and I have some nice buns
for your suppers. Did you miss
me much, dears .'"
We knocked then, and th talking
tl used.
The oil 1 tdy came to the door and
bade us welcome, adding:
"I've just given the children their
suppers and gotten them to bed."
On a table in the centre of tho
rooiti wi fe four plates, in each of
which lay a small piece of sweet
bread, with a tiny cup of milk be
side it .
"Children will waste so," said the
pour old creatine. "I'll just eat
what they have left, just to keep
from throwing it away."
She did this with an assumption
of can losMtess, yet with a hunger
t hat told us it wtiH her own nuppcr
"Would you like to see the chil
dren .'" she asked me, tidying up
the room. I said yes. So she led
us into the back room. A comfor
table child's bed and a smaller crib
set side by side, whilo a hard cot
was evidently her own couch. Mo
tioning us to make no noise, she
crept softly up to tho little empty
bed.
"Thin is Jennie and May," nhe
said. "Just seven and live. Jennie
In lps me so much. She pluyH with
the other children when lam itway,
and is so good. May in tho beauty
Just look at her lashes !" Then
crossing to the crib: "Una ih my
bubv boy, my Neddio. Hush, huh!
Mothot'H hero," putting tho little
white pillow.
We turned aside to hide our tearp.
It w as ho sad and touching to nee
this forlorn old woman soothing
back to sleep a child tlmt had nlum
bered in its little grave for fifty
year. When we went back to the
other room she nat and talked to us
for an hour of tho children, giving
all the details of their imaginary
ailments, w inning ways and clever
sayings. (od had indeed tempered
the wind to the shorn lamb.
One day the following winter my
friend came to me in great anxiety.
"I'm afraid something has hap
pened to Mrs. Martin. She was en
gaged to come to mo yesterday
morning and she has not come. She
is always ho regular and reliable
that I'm afraid sin; must bo Hick."
We set oil' at once for her cottago
and found her very ill of pneumonia.
A neighbor nat watching by hernide.
She beckoned us to one side and
told us the doctor had given her pa
tient up. so wo removed our hats
and nat down to await the end. Tho
poor ojd woman knew us at once.
"Things have come back l ight to
me. I must have been wrong in my
head a long time. They tell mo this
is lss't. Then my children have
been gone fifty years. 15ut God has
been good to me. He has let ine
have them, anyhow, and now that I
know they are with Hint, Heis going
to let lue go homo to them."
And just as the new day dawned
and its light fell on Iter upturned
face she went home forever to the
children.
