to appear shortly in a sumptuous
volume. The work will bo written
by the editor of the paper, from
porsonal knowledge and a thorough
acquaintance with the subject and
the district. It will embody various
features necessarily omitted by car
ier publications and be the only rv
curate description of the terrible
calamity that destroyed thousands
of human lives. Many portraits and
views, engraved by the most emi
nent artists from original drawings
and photographs, will bo a special
feature. Nothing will bo spared to
ensure the highest literary and ar
tistic olegauco. Then the iietl pro
reeds from the sales of thoworkjwill
bo applied for the benefit of the
Printers, Orphan Children and Aged
Men and Women who suffered by
the flood AVe heartily commend
the project to the public, and be
speak an immemso demand for the
book. It will bo well for local can
vassers to secure an agency at once,
at the book will bo sold by subscrip
tion.
The Ocean Depths.
The greatest known depth of the
sea is in the South Atlantic Ocean,
midway between the island of Tris
tan d'Acunha and the mouth of the
Rio de la Plata. The bottom was
there reached at a depth of I0,23
feet, or eight und three-quarter
miles, exceeding by more than 17,
(MMI feet the height of Mount Everest,
the loftiest mountain in the world
Iu the North Atlantic Ocvan, south
of Newfoundland, soundings have
been made to a. depth of 4,580 fath
oms, or 27.4HO feet, while depths,
equalling 34.IHH1 feet, or six and a
half miles, are reported south of the
Bermuda islands. The average
dpth of the Pacific Ocean between
Japan and California is n little over
2.000 fathoms : between Chili am
the Sand with Islands, 2 500 fathoms
and between Cliila and New Zeal
and, 1,500 fathoms. lite average
depth of all the oceans is from 2,000
to 2,500 fathoms.
