The Middlehurgh Musical Conven
tion held in Seebold's Hall this week
is quite well attended considering
tho inclemency of the weather the
fore part of the week. Prof. Paul
Dillhardt is proving himself a very
competent conductor and all are
pleased with his work. The class

HutValo Valley on Staurday evening
last where he was engaged in lum
bering for Kalbach Rros., was lu ll
up by two masked men near Ulrich's
Schools house. 1 miles south of
New Berlin uud ordered to deliver
his money. They reported their
demand and he handed them his
pocket-book which contained less
than a dollar in change. He had
concealed in an inside vest pocket a
roll of money amounting to up
wards of seventy-live dollars which
hud just boon paid him before leav
ing tho mill. While tho parties wore
examining tho contents of his pocket-book
ho moved on, and, seeing
them follow him. he started in a
dead run for homo 3J miles distant.
The robbers evidently knew of him
having the money and upon discov
ering that they had been foiled, start
ed in pursuit, but Mr. Trutt was too
fleet-footed and cams homo at a
quarter utretch gait, having every
stitch of his clothos wo iked with per
spiration. It wa a narrow escapo
fjr his hard-earned wages, and
the scoundrels should be looked up
and Bumarily dealt with.

Willis Straub, of Centre tow nship,
son of Commissioner Samuel Straub,
had a fearful ride on Monday of this
week. While going down Young's
hill, 2 miles north of Middh bnrgh
w ith forty bushels of lime and four
hoises, he took the "rough-lock" oil",
when the wagon idiot ahead and tlu
horses being unable tohold it, start
ed down the long lull n a d-ad run
The animals being all siire-t'outed
and good runners, k pt ahead and
by the time they readied the foot

was thrown twenty feet from the
wagon. Mr. Straub clung to the
lines and brought the team to a
stuiid-slill at Mr. Rriiiinei's barn. It
was a terrible ride and a miraculous
escape, as nothing was injured save
the wagon.
Tho building fever has struck Mid
dleburgii and there will bt more
building going on next summer than
ever before. Among the improve
ments contemplated is the tearing
down of the Witteumyer property
on the square and the erection of a
new brick block w ith store-room and
dwelling house combined. Out of
the material of tho old building sev
eral new dwelling houses will be
built on the French Flats. M. Z.
Steininger will erect a now dwelling
house on the situ of the old house,
Jesso Rilgor will erect a now dwelling
iu the west part of town, Dr. J. W.
Orwig contemplates eructing a new
store-room 011 his lot purchased of
tho Kramer estate, C. Stetler talks
of building a new house 011 his lot,
Emanuel Schoch intends repairing;
the corner house, D. T. Rhoads will
rebuild his Swim-ford property, and
lots of other improvements of which
we have not heard. The saiuo spirit
is showing itself in Swincford and a
number of new housos will go up
there. We are pleased to note this
spirit of improvement as it will af
ford work for idle hands, improve
tho town, enhance tho value of pro
perty ond make times better gener
ally.

lish an extinct from his son's (M. T.
Orwig, telegraph operator at Wood
land, I'.,) letter describing the trag
ic end of a friend :
"We had a very sad death here
ust Monday afternoon. A Mr. Al
beit was not feeling well and about
3:15 o'clock p. in., he walked into the
drug store at tins place and asked
the druggist for a drink of whiskev.
The druggist told him he did not
dare sell him any, but pointed to a
bottle audsaid, thcrcstaudstlie bot
tle.' Mr. Albert picked up what he
thought was the bottle ot whiskey
and took a drink, walked to a chair
and sat down. He had hardly taken
a seat when he turned to the drug
gist and said, 'I believe I got the

him to tell quick which bottle Iih
drunk out of. Mr. A. showed him
the bottle and he found it to be a
bottle of aconite rank poison. The
Iruggist gave nun an emetic luime
liately and sent for a doctor. They
also telephoned to Clearfield for one
or two doctors, Thev did all they
could for him. but in half an hour or
more he was dead. Mr. A was a
very fine man, and was not known
to be a drinking man."

school house on Thursday evening,

members were fully prepared to
give satisfaction. The public is re

Emanuel Peter's English blood

Half of a good ham was found in a
box car which had been run on the
track leading to the tannery, a week
or so ago. It is prohalilf t hat tramps
who had been stealing their way on
tho cars left it there.
Those of our citizens who own ice
houses have been filling them during
the past w eek. I he ice generally
was only medium in quality.
Ren. F. Hoffman, who has been
confined to his bed and his room for
several months, and whose sickness
has twice been referred to in these
communications, is now slowly re
covering. He has been sull'erirg
from an abscess in his side, which
evi. ml weeks HL'O was subjected to
an incision by Dr. Strohcckcr. Since
then the patient has been improving.
He will soon be able to leave the
house.
Frank M. Kline has erected a new
sign in front of his baiber shop.
Johnnie, a son of Judge Wetzel
suffered a serious attack of rheuma
tism last week. It had collected in
the region of bis heart and some
what threatened his life.
Some one ut the writer's home
found a new buggy whip about a
milo west of Paxtonville on Satur
day. The owner can have it by call
ing for it if property is proved. In
quire at the Jews' store.
Annie, a daughter of Uriah Howell,
is seriously sick with pneumonia.
Sleighing is about exhausted in
this section. Citizen.

evening Charles E. Keller win ar
rested by Constable J. H. Kline for
opening and robbing the safe of Dr.
A. M. Smith. Tho young man had
been in the habit of taking money
from the safe from time to time but
escaped detection. He had tried
other safes but without success.
Two years ago he served a term in
the county jail for robbing the
church.
Edward Knrpp is lying danger
ously ill with a fever.
J. W. Swartz and family of Mid
dleburgii paid our town a visit re

George Haines of Shamokiu Dam
has purchased Mrs. A. M. Kling's
property for $91.
A Chinese troupe will give an ex
hibition in tho Reformed Church on
the evening of the 12th. Admission

On last Saturday wo got a guaran

Our handsome young friend, Trap
per Jim, has tried living alone for
some tw enty years, but finally found
out that it was uncomfortable, and
decided on measures of reform. He
accordingly got up a sleding party,
and engaged for his partner the
handsome daughter of our village
black-smith. Tho place agreed on,
wub the St. Peter's church, whero a
protracted meeting is in progress.
Jim was very jubilant on the way to
the church, and acted like all love
smitten persons do, but when the
church was reached, Jim got a black
eye from his sweet "gig a-biddie,"
for she informed him that she was
ashamed to enter the vhurch with
him as an escort, and refused to
make another step Jim wa.-i now
at his w it's end, and, after liberating
her from his sweet embrace, said
something that did not sound like a
benediction to those who were with
in ear-shot, and dismissed her. Af
ter the meeting closed, Jim took a
seat in front w ith the di iv er, and in
place of singing lou -songs and talk
ing of the bright future that laid be
fore him and his partner, hegave the
whip an occassional crack, and every

the Prohibitory Amendment. They
are New Hampshire, Massachusetts.
Connecticut, rw York and l'enn
sylvania. Five voted on it l ist year
and in every instance there was a
large majority against the Amend
nient. The states Voting last year
