On S pt ni1er 21st Ihhi;, we
our native stute, renn'a. for a
Hinith. Our lirnt stop was in Wash
ington, D. C We arrived there in
the M'liiug, ami the first sight of 1 n,.)H are nerved from 2 to
this city, an we bilii'ld it, with it
lofty marble and granite building,
itx t i v wide, and beautifully paved
htn-ets. was-imlei-d a grand sight'
a-, the soft ta.VH (.f the i h ctrie limits
showed all in pel-fret as sunlight.
During our stay there, we vinited
the "White House," V. S. War and
Navy Departments t'. S. Treasury,
Patent Oilier, V. S. Post Ofliee and
Deal htter OlT.ee, National Mu
seum, Smithsonian Institute, and
the I". S. Capitol. Of earh on of
these many interesting thing" might
be said if time permitted. I shall
however mention a few. We spent
more time in the Capitol than any
other public building, we saw there
ninny thing v.hii h tiiur will not ef
face while memory lasts. On enter
ing the Model room where are the
statues of our departed statesmen
whii-h arc so life-like that for a
moment we are almost reluctant to
make ourselves believe that it is but
cold marble. The Library of Con
gress is a grand sight with its thous
ands of books of all kinds and styles
of two copies each, of all copyright
ed books of the United States. The
Senate Chamber, the Marbht room,
the President's Reception room,
me all magnificently furnished, the
furniture in the Reception room
alone costing M7,00(). In the Na
tional Museum we see wonders
from all over the world. Many
beautiful things from Japan, China,
and India, as well as the clothcg
Grorgv' VVi rrfjaigton wore when lie
was christ K;l. Another beautiful
building by ilsi-lf, and has a floor of
stone, the nppearancc would be diffi
cult to describe. Kvery family, how
ever small, has a colored cook. White
w omen do not cook or wash dishes,
and to do their own washing and
ironing is never thought of, that is
work sent out of the house.

new building of tlic l'atent Otlice.
Ourisil then; was about 4 P.M.
just as the Autumn sun was shed
ding her lovely rays through the col

falling on tlic soft, rich carpet, and
the bright glass cases, reflecting
clear as crystal, (in which are the
numerous art icles). This sight held
the w i iter spellbound. The many
colors blending in lovely harmony,
the order and purity seemed more
than a building made with hands.

the old "Hickory State," North

bare sandy soil, ami now and then a
small log cabin, without any win

being through the cracks and the

green fields and hills, tho golden
corn fields and the orchards with
their tri es heavy laden with delic

ed our destination we find such a
marked change from our own cus

realize that we are only a distance of
six hundred miles from Cenral Penn

without a cellar or foundation, but
instead a pillar of brick placed on
the ground (or sand) about two feet
high under each corner. Pew of the
houses arc two stories high, and the
