New Year, or C'liriMiiiii, ami that is
the il.iy in which we put up the stove.
It h is lieen stuinlinirin the garret nr
sheil all summer, ilull ml deiul, the
fires gone out of the ohl buck-slider.
Spiders have festooned the joints of
Hi' pip", and run in and out thesoo

perhaps having heeii the nursery
where tlie'old eat honorably brought
up her household of kittens. 5ut
the day forjputtiiijj up the stove has
com..'. The children tly around with
expectation, and are somewhat in
the way during the undert uking.
Tlie pipes are brought out and emp
tied, mid thumped clear of soot and
dust. The housewife goes over all
th" surfaces with Muekeiiing polish,
making tlie homely dark a handsome
Mack, and then the work of carrying
the tove into the sitting-room com
mences. There are not enough
h ind. There never are. We have
put up stoves a dozen times, and
never had help enough. Stoves are
so uiiwieldl.v, and they feel so heavy
when you set them down mi your in
step. Father, with his lower lin
clinched on his teeth, lifts and pulls
and shoves, and yets fast in the
doorway. Mother and the. serving,
maid eomo to the rescue, hut pull
the stove the wrong way, and yet an
invocation upon the carelessness.
"Don't you see what you are doing ?
Pull it hack the other way ! Ouch !
Just look at the hack of my hand.
Mack and Mue from this scrougiiig.
There I Vou have set that right leg
f it right on my sore toe ! My side

lift the heavy burden leaches
the middle of the room. Xow hegins
the work of tinding one of the lost
legs. Out- of them is gone. There
is always one of them gone. The
sheds are ransacked to no avail, and
two hrieks ale temporarily suhsti
tilted. Then the pipe is to he joined
and set up. This requires moru cou-n-ieiitinus
and determined coiisis
tency of behavior than any other
part. A man who will keep correct
ness of speech in all the rest of the
process needs some toning up here.
You make up your mind as to where
the joints and pieces belong, and iii
si.st on their taking their places, but
how to insert the larger in the small
er in a conundrum ;yet with hammer
you pound, und bang, und twist un
til you have four stubborn pieces an
nexed, and have them hoisted. You
rise on the top of a chuir to make
the last conjunction ; you handle the
whole affair with utmost skillfulness;
you have your wife holding the pipe
at the bottom, and the daughter
holdmg jt at the middle, w hen, with
out the slightest premonition, ono
of the lower joints backs out of its
plaoe, and down all cornes in ono
grand crash, the wife struck by the
falling pieces, the daughter frighten
ed lest she may somehow have been
the cause of the mishap, yourself
running your Booty hand across your
brow to w ipe off the perspiration,
leaving you, in stage-struck position,
black as Othello. Kvery time the
attempt ih wniv, the line of pipe
parts at a new place until at last, to
the relief of the whole household,
the undertaking is eempleted. Then
the first fire is kindled, the smokeat
lirst not knowing whether to come
out in the room and be sociable, or
go up the chimney and disappear,
liut at last the great black instru
ment of comfort roars with a chorus
of congratulation and good cheer,
and in the evening all the family
gather about to hear it laugh and
crackle. Oood old stove. For the
coming autumn and winter months
it will draw the family together.
Let the winds howl down the chim
ney and the snows drift over the
tops of the fenoeH, on the floor of
your country home will stand this
great, warm-hearted benediction.
May there be as many feet on the
hearth next spring as this autumn,
aud no loss or Borrow or bereave
ment turn the damper.
