rate of a million a week, and we are

treasures it appears that the surplus
will he only almut twelve millions,
which if the Mills hill were to lie
passed and to result in its operation
as its advocates say it will, must lie
turned into a deficit of sixty millions!
This is a dreadful situation. It calls
up Mr. Mills to ask the house to
withdraw his hill. He has lieen leg

turns out to he only a theory. The
capacity of the Democratic party lo
scatter tin- puMic money was not
taken into account.
The TrchitUion Tarty.
'n. Post. I have read with inter
est your reckless analvsis ol our
Prohibition l'arty in your lust issue,
and desire to reply to your ipiestion
as to what we have done as a party
to promote the cause of prohibit ion.
Your assertion that a "few noble
men, ha ve, i bv lending t heir names
and inllueiii'c to the party given it
whatexer standing it has in the con
fidence of the people,' is true, and
we insist on all "noble men" doing
the same to increase this confidence.
P.ut. we deny that this epiitidelice
"rests smiley" on a few, but assert
t hat t his class of men in our party
can be numbered by the tens of
of thousands iniead. We atliirm.
also that that this eoiilnli nee is
due mostly to what it intends and
promises todo when in power, viz:
to kill the public liiitor traffic by
pnhilitm enforced instead of pro
longing it s life by license- the pol
icy of the old part ies - and not as
you allirm to the "few noble men iu
our party." We also deny that there
is a different ela-s of men iu the par
ty from those you call noble, and
should like to hear of a single in
stance where the part y's hiyh stand
aid has been debased through tin
pulling of wires or the baging of
game. At our State Convent ion in
llarrisburg, a call was made for all
the preachers, Sunday Schools up
erintetideiits and church membersto
rise, and when this class took the
tloor there Were Very few of the ."il H
delegates left sitting. Can any oth
er party show sin h a record ? W'c
have no saloon keepir.-.. In ewers,
distillers, or ISob Illgefsolites in
our ranks. Have you .'
Again. You deitoiiiiee ii and say:
"They inn V did any vjhhI no brav
ery, all bray." etc.. ami blame us as
being disastrous to the cause of
Prohibition. You say the Diino
cratic party praises us and we like
it." and many other similar assif.
t ioi is 1 1 1 w liieh w e I 'l ie My reply : We
in ei-made any laws nor enforced
llu in directly, and im party eer did
until it had the power. We ale
now building up a party to enforce
completely a Constitutional law
something that mithei of the old
part ies iiccr can or will do. as the
saloon nil ii are about eipiallv divid
ed betwieli tin ill. Were the Prohi
bition martyrs. Watson, Smith,
Haddoei;, i . ,1 end others, six
in numer, vc ihr v hocus or were
they brave.' Would they have been
slain as 1 )( nioerat s or as lie publican?
And why not .'
Publish one disaster that the Pro
hibition party caused and we will
prove to you that the IJepuhlican
party is responsible for Michigan's
failure, Oregon's failure, Iowa's fail
ure mid the failure to enforce the
lihode Island amendment. Our
party is the only one that ever con
tributed thousands of dollars into
the light to carry a Constitutional
Amendment.
In Michigan's contest not a single
Republican daily dared to work in
favor of the amendment, and in one
district there were more votes east
against the amendment than the
number of voters in the district
Are we to blame for that ? The Ke
publican papers defeated us in Ore
gon. The difference bi t w een the
vote for Prohibition and for our
party is no argumi nt against us but
for us as it shows there are enough
men in favor of the principle in this
county to control this government
mid destroy the saloon jusf as soon
as we can get them united in a solid
Prohibition National Party.
