Sev eral months after I had written you on the subject named above, I rem in the coIuihh of the Foht an account of the bottom of this famous lake giving way, and my object at this writing is to acquaint you of the fact that such was not the case. The lake has had its usual quote of Vermillion colored Initios each year since I last wrote you, and by the string of excursionists up the long ood River Valley over the lofty Sawtooth mountains and across the verdant and picturesque slope of the Salmon Valley to the Hod lish lakes, will repeat the past. The season begins about the first of the coming month, and is indicative of some sport or pleasure more than ordinarily recreative and attractive J hat sport is fishing for gamy red lish which exist in such great mini bers in the lakes and streams of (he Hill nawiooiu range, or, lor tnose more daring, the pursuit and capture of the ferocioiiH grizxly bear. Ferhaps a very small minority of the huu dieds who yearly visit those en chanting scenes, go for "bar." The others are content with lesser ex cittnient and more exhilarating pas time. The red lish begin to "run aiioui ine -jotn ot July eacli year, and continue tho ascent from stream to stream and from lake to lake that ho linked together beneath those majestic hills, until they hav reached tho highest accessible wa ters among the mountains, and then spawn, and, us tho story goes, hav Air ii, i uig oui-iived ineir useiuiness, "give up tho ghost." For years since the discovery of that grand chain of lakes and water-falls that adorn tho head waters of the Salmon river, it ban been Hupposed and often claim ed that the red-fish annually notice able in those waters, came with the salmon trout from the far distant waters of the Columbia river or the acific ocean ; that they came each year at a certain time to spawn. That theory is the generally accept ed to-day ; but your correspondent as recently interviewed several old trappers and - fisherman of that region, men who have camped there for months and months and ought to know who claim that theory to be unfounded. They believe the red-fish to bo native of those lakes, imdigenous as it were, to those wa ters. They have watched the lowest outlets for months steadily and never once caught sight of a single red-fish on his journey to higher waters. This argument seems to be a pretty conclusive one. The peculiar shape and color of the red fish, they claim, has never been found in the ocean or the Columbia river. While the Salmon of those waters annually puts in bis appear ance among the red-tish of the lakes, they believe the latter to be peculiar to those waters. The red lish is of a bright red color and grows to a weight of seven or eight pounds. His shape is similar to that of a salmon, but ho has a more pointed head and smaller tail. Ho seldom if ever, takes a hook but is readily de tected in the clear mountain streams and lakes, and is taken with grab hooks especially manufactured for his discomfiture. These are ingen iously made and atl'ord a world of exciting sport with these giimey creatures. Their fiesh is quiti sweet and juicy, bones few, but they are not considered as choice for th table as their associates, the trout, salmon trout, and salmon. W. J. Ktkely. Middle Cheek. Most of tho oats is cut, and a good deal is plowed for fall seeding. Farmers, select the best kind of wheat to how as in the end it is the cheapest. Mr. Willaid Mechtley's little girl got a severe fall while walking across some hoards in Mrs. Martin's house. Diphtheria is prevalent in this community. Several deaths occurr ed from it quite recently. Mrs. Tradder of l'hiladelphia who had been visiting in this vicinity through tho summer returned home last week. At last the rolls are in operation and turn out a No. 1 Hour as was stated in a previous issue. A good many of our people attend ed the picnic at Adumsburg on Sat urday.
