The Naturalized American.
A K' cat deal him and can be naid
with recard to immigration in Amer
ica. That thincountry has received
great and lasting benefit h through
thin none need deny, while on the
other hand a ood many of doubtful
character and habits, whose "room
would have been inliitely better than
their company" have managed
through this loophole to xlip in
among us, and their presence have in
many instances proved detrimental
to the interests of our citizens and
the institutions of our country; but
for all that w e would venture to say,
if both were put in a balance, the
good would largely outweigh the
bad. It is surprising, if we contem
plate the fact, how so many of differ
ent nationalities, habits, and educa
tion, can combine together in the
manner they have done, and present
such a solid phalanx whenever the
peace and unity of our nation is at
stake, or any foreign power threatens
to encroach upon us. lint too much
must not be expected or required
from the naturalized American. The
laud that gave him birth will always,
naturally, have a nook in his heart
and memory which he will at times
love to ponder over. The Irishman
will never forget the '"harp 'f Erin''
and the green Hag, the (lerman will
admire his Uisiiiiirck and Kaiser
William, the Englishman will always
be ready to talk of Gladstone and
other celebrities of his country, and
so on through all the different na
tionalities that Hock to our country,
there will be something in the land
they have in a measure renounced,
to admire and lmld in fond recollec
tion. Said IJyrou, the renowned
poet, "England with nil thy faults I
love thee still. "and this will natural
ly be the expression of every natur
alized citizen of this county. Well,
after all theif is no harm in it. No
treason to their adopted country
either in thought, word, or deed, is
intended, and, the sequel has prov
ed in the past that if this country is
in peril they are a unit in standing
up in defence. The born Americans
have been generous in opening up
their borders and welcoming the
foreigner to locate among them, why
not let that generosity go a little
further and overlook their tenets
formed in the laud of their birth, as
long as it does not intrude on the
principles of our government? Of
course the refusal to allow any other
than the American flag to adorn our
public, building is peif.-ctly right,
these are American institutions and
that Hag only should I'.oat over it;
but there is a tendency among a
good many to grow impatient when
the (lerman speaks cf the "Father
land,'' or those i f any other nation
talk favorably of institutionsof their
country. It is but a matter of time
until this dies out, and the next gen
eration that sprint's up come out as
full Hedged Americans.

(ieiieral Harrison has. since his
nomination, been called upon by a
great many of his ardent Western
admirers, who insist upon speeches
and who are of a kind that cannot be
put off. lie has propnhly made
twenty live short addresses to these
vi-itors and ha- in this respect been
much more obliging than any Pres

excepting (lively and lllaine. Yet
it iscminciitly to thceredit of Gener
al Harrison for good sense that he
has said nothing in these speeches
which has betrayed the slightest
tendency to be loquacious. With
out attempting to say brilliant things
he has always had something pleas

fashion, which shows that he values
