Last week, several thousand
day-old Leghorn chickens were
sent to the Agricultural Depart
ment at Harrisburg by poultry
men to be given free in lots of
twenty to farmers who would
sign an agreement that they
would help to increase the supply
of poultry in the State. Many

beer, which "breeds the wretch
ed type of beer-Philistine with
which everyone is familiar.
The term, Philistinism," as
describing the intellectual deso
lation and brutalization resulting
from the beer habit, is now uni
versal. ' The Scientific American
says.
"The most dangerous classes
of ruffians in our large cities are
beer drinkers. Intellectually a
atupor amounting almost to pa
ralysis arrests the reason, chang
ing all the higher faculties into a
mere animalism, sensual, selfish,
sluggish, varied.only with parox
ysms of anger, Benseless and
brutal."
It also continues its unflatter
ing remarks as follows:
"In appearance the beer drink
er may be the picture of health,
but in reality he is most incapa
ble of resisting disease. A slight
injury, s severe cold, or a shock
to the body or mind will common
ly provoke acute disease, ending
fatally. Compared with other
inebriates who use different kinds
of alcohol, he is more incurable
and more generally diseased. It
is our observation that beer
drinking in this country produces
the verv lowest kind of inebriety,
closely allied to criminal insanity."

produced in the United States if

quantity of wheat, but only a very
small portion of the crop from
5 to 10 per cent has been used
for human food. This amount
may be estimated in normal
times at about 200,000,000 bushels

been exported in peace times.
A relatively flight increase in
the corn acerage, therefore, will
place many millions of bushels
more of human food "at the dis
posal of the world without inter
fering in any way with the feed
