At a recent examination In common
knowledge connected with war terms,
nt a certain school, the pupils were
asked to write down the English of

Unfamiliar foreign words are often
strangely defined. A young studeut
said that an appendix was a portion of
the body which was neither use nor

an eight-sided figure, whilst a bright
young lndy defined a synonym as the
word you use when you can't spell tho
other.

who will be fifteen years old next Au
gust, has obtained a license from the
government as a first-grnde commercial
radio operator. Ability to take 20
words a minute is required. SIddall
,took 25. He Is In school now and be
came Interested In wireless less than a
year ago. The small plant which he
built was closed by government or
ders a short time ago.
At Dorothy Understood It.
While Dorothy's mother wus rending
to tho Uttlo girl she came to the word
"gravitation." She explained Its mean
ing briefly, but thought the child would
forget It. Consequently, she was much
surprised when, a few days later, Dor
othy came running In, exclaiming ex

This pretty little chateau belongs to Sarah llernhnrdt, the famous French
actress, who hns not seen It since the beginning of the war. It Is now held
by tho Germans and this picture wus made recently showing that until then, at
least, the Germans hod spnred tho chnrmlng llttlo place.
UNDERGROUND AMBULANCE STATIONS
Trentlng wounded French soldiers underground. This Is but one of many
similar dressing stntlons organized by the French Red Cross along tho battle
fronts. Located far underground, the doctors and Injured are seldom the
target for enemy shells. In the case of serious Injury, the men nre given tem
porary treatment In these subterranean hospitals and then removed to the
hospitals In the rear as quickly as possible.

local coal operator, has enlisted as

Altoona. High cost of feed and la
bor have driven the Tleasant Valley
Stock Farm, Blair B. Hileman, pro
prietor, Into bankruptcy, with $07,000
liabilities.
Wayne Churches have forwarded
to tho President a Joint resolution urg
ing war prohibition.
Wayne. St. Mary's Protestant Epis
copal Church has been presented with
a silk American flag by William Vor
ner. Belleville. Tho Mcnnonito Breth
ren hnve closed their conference at
this town, 50 visiting ministers. In
cluding returned missionaries and rep
resentatives of all churches east of
the Mississippi River having attended.
Merlon. Jacob A. Kcttenrlng, a
commlssionor, has astounded his cus
tomers nnd acquaintances by changing
his Ardmoro from a retail to a co
operative basis.
Easton. Howard Butler, 45. a
bricklayer, lay on the Lehigh Valley
Railroad tracks In front of a freight
train and was so badly Injured that
he died several hours lator In the
hospital.
Pittsfiold. One thousand acres of
land In thto vicinity, have been loascd
by Warren operators, and a number of
wildcat, deep-test wells will bo dril
led. Hazclton. An underweight seller
near Hazelton was forced to refund
$100 on $259 for hay.
Enola. Citizens turned out In full
array to dedicate tho new $35,000
Summit Hill High School.
York. Tho use of fireworks In
York, as well as the sale of pyrotech
nics, is prohibited by an ordinance
passed by Council.
Shenandoah. A Coroner's jury
found that Patrick Donahue was tho
slayer of Dr. Harry F. Kilty and his
patient, Mrs. May Donahue.
Scranton. Federal Attorney Rod
gers L. Burnett, has handed a check
for $16,500 to Henry Krentzman, the
purchase price of the St. Charles Ho
tel, Lewlstown, where, he assures tho
public, a Federal Building will be
erected.
Ilarrlsburg. Twenty or more High
School boys at St. Mary's learned
something about forestry by assisting
in planting treos on the Silver Creek
water shed near Paul street. The St.
Mary's Water Company received 6,000
evergreen trees for this purpose.
Tltnovllle. The Country Club will
rebuild this summer the $30,000 club
house which was destroyed by lire
recently.
' Hazleton. Principal A. D. Thomas,
of the High School, besides urging his
students to work on farms, has en
couragod some of them to help in
the mining of coal. Accordingly a
number of the students are now wear
ing mining lamps and aro working
beside the miners.
Altoona. Retired employes of the
Pennsylvania Railroad on the Altoona
division have been recalled to active
service, help Is so scares.
Altoona. Forest fires burned off
1000 acros of timber.
Scranton. The Lackawanna Com
pany has notified employes at Scran
ton that It has raised the salarica of
10.000 clerks.
Harrlsburg. A full war census of
miners of the hard coal field was tak
en unofficially through the medium of
the pay windows of the different col
lieries. Lewlstown. A detail of soldiers on
guard at Lewlstown hiked Into the
Narrow and removed two small Aus
trian flags floating from the top of
Huckleberry Peak.
