It has not been forgotten that the kicking over of a lantern started the great Chicago fire That i3 not the last and only fire caused by a lantern, and persons who have occasion to use them about barn3, cannot exercise too great care. The explosion of a lantern on Tuesday morning of last week, started a fire that .com pletely .destroyed a large barn near Boiling Springs, Cumberland county, on a farm tenanted by John Swartz. Most of the live stock, and much of the contents of the barn were destroyed. For Winter Spraying. A new but determined and ex tensive fruit grower of Bedford county, Pa., wrote to State Zo ologist H. A. Surface, Harrisburg, asking for information as to just how to proceed to make a satis factory lime sulfur solution by boiling it in a kettle. He made specific inquiry as to how the materials should be put together and boiled. Thousands of fruit growers will within the next few weeks or months need the infor mation given in the reply of Pro fessor Surface, which is as follows: "I can assure you that one ket tle is sufficient for making lime sulfur solution all right I send you some of my printed directions on making it. You should bear in mind that we have gradually grown in our knowledge of the subject from the time when we advocated the old formula of seventeen pounds of sulfur and twenty-two of lime to fifty gal lons of water, into the present modern formula of the concen trated home-made or commercial storable solution calling for two pounds of powdered or pulverized sulfur to be boiled with each pound of quick lime in a gallon of water, for about three quar ters of an hour, and the liquid is then to be taken off and stored in a barrel to be diluted and used when wanted. "I put the material together by putting in a little water. Stir the sulfur with water to make a mush. Put in the lime and pour this sulfur mash on top of it at once. Then stir while the lime is slaking. After the slaking is done add more water, and stir it up from the bottom and let it boil. If there is someone at hand it is all right to stir it occasion ally, but I have boiled it many times without stirring it after the lime slaked. Do not boil one hour, as it is liable to give it too much sediment. Boil three quar ters of an hour. Overboiling re sults in a lot of thick muddy sedi ment, which comes from a chem ical change in the sulfur that throws it out of solution, and con sequently weakens the solution and causes trouble by making too much sediment Put the red liquid into barrels and keep it as long as you wish, and when ready to use dilute with six or seven times its bulk of water."
