Let's hope they were not joking.

Spring arrived last Saturday.
The young lady looked well after
having spent the winter in the
South. Her nose was blue from
the cold she found north of the
Mason an Dixon Line, but as she
wore the latest style white wig
she looked patriotic with her red
lips, white wig and blue nose.
State Zoologist, H. A. Sur
face, Harrisburg, Pa., says that
Fulton county is entitled to have
several more orchards taken in
charge by the State. The orch
ards will be used for public dem
onstration purposes by the State
and the owner will receive the
benefit in the way of special in
structions in the management of
the orchards. Make your appli
cations early, since "First come,
first served."
It is estimated that 819 cows
furnishing milk to consumers in
Hagerstown have been tested
with tuberculin. Of these cows
53 were found to have had tuber
culosis. Thirty of the diseased
cows were slaughtered. Ot those
slaughtered 12 were passed as fit
for food; 18 as unfit for food.
The balance have been shipped
out of the country or placed in
quarantine to be disposed of by
the state live stock sanitary
board.
The First Cattle Feeders' Con
vention ever held in Pennsylva
nia will occur at State College,
April 3, 1914. Sixty head of
West Virginia cattle were fed
there this year. They were fed
in five separate lots, and it is said
that results are of great interest
to feeders. The herd will be
judged on that day by experts
for the benefit of visitors. The
trip will pay to take if you are
interested in the economical feed
ing of beef cattle.

A Strange Animal.
On last Sunday while several
sportsmen of Hustontown were
enjoying a stroll in the spring
sunshine they located a strange
animal in its den. Returning
home they organized an army
that, from the report .sent us, we
judge resembled General Villa's
forces in the variety of ''wee
pans" carried. Bright and early
on Monday morning they sallied
forth to the measured beat of
the drum a temporized affair
composed of a short stick with
which one of the officers (they
were all officers) beat rhythmical
ly on his boot leg.
To make a long story short,
when the fierce critter came out
to defend its home, it knocked
the lone dog into a cocked hat,
put one of the officers up the
tallest tree on the ridge, while
the other two stood their ground,
one beating the drum and the
other trying to fire a rusty gun.
By an unexplained accident the
lone gunner got a bullet into the
enemy which quieted it It and
the dog were then carried home,
but the animal revived during
the following night and is again
at large, and science will again
have to suffer the loss of the op
portunity to record a new species
hitherto unknown in the wilds of
Taylor township. X. Y. Z.
Unoccupied Farms.
It may not be generally known
that the Department of Agricul
ture, at Harrisburg, is now pre
paring a bulletin listing the
abandoned or unoccupied farms
in Pennsylvania that are for sale.
Anyone having a farm of this
class who wish to sell it, might
do well to write to the Secretary
of Agriculture at once for a de
scriptive application blank.
The Department does not desire
information regarding farms that
are occupied or that are being
operated.

only seventy-one beats to the minute. We know a young man in

right up into his mouth and beat so rapidly that it churned his
palate off.
