The Swarming of Bees. Bees and their habits come up among the questions referred to the Division of Zoology of the Pennsylvania Department of Ag nculture. Disputes occasionally arise among bee keepers in re gard to swarming. A Shippens burg man recently asked Profes sor H. A Surface, State Zoolo gist, to settle an argument on that subject He asked: "Do bees clean out a tree before they swarm, or do they take the queen and go at random, locating in any tree that comes m their way ?" The answer of State Zoologist Surface was as follows: "In reply to your recent letter asking whether bees clean out a tree before they swarm, or wheth er they and the queen go at ran dom when they leave the hive, I beg to say that it is now estab lished that tbey are liable to do either. Sometimes the colony finds a place arid even gets to work at cleaning the tree cavity before they swarm, but 1 think that they generally swarm and at once send out scouts and wait for these to return to the cluster with the information mat they have found a place to which to go. If dissatisfied with this, they may remain there aud send out scouts agam to find a new place to which they may go. 1 have known them to move two or three times. On the other baud, they sometimes will swarm and cluster, and for some reason remain, and dwindle away, or perhaps fly short dis tauces and cluster again and again. "I am pleased to see that yon are interested in the study ol the habits of bees, as this is the chief feature upon which practical, successful bee keeping should bt based. If you have made obsery ations in this lino, I shall be glad to learn of them, but I think we should bear in ramd that there U a variation in the action of swarm log."
