Spraying Plum Trees, Potato Vines, CtcJ
Among the letters recently re
ceived by Frof. Surface, State
Zoologist, at Uarrisburg, was one
from a Dauphin county farmer,
which should be given wide pub
licity. The correspondent wrote:
"A few years ago my fruit
trees were dying from the effects
of the San Jose scale. Fortun
ately, following your advice, I
bought a good spray pump and
ipparatus for using the lime sul
fur wash, and began spraying
thoroughly fall and spring, and
today 1 haVe'several hundred fine,
healthy trees, practically free
from scale. On trees that were
covered with scale from the tips
of the branches to the trunks net
a live scale can be found.
"Kindly answer the following
questions: (1) llow much Paris
gren to a gallons of water can be
used safely to spray plum trees?
I used a teaspoonful last yerr to
8 gallons of wat.ir and killed many
fruit buds. (-) Tell me how to
make a spray for iotato blight;
how much bluestone and lime to
use to u() gallons of water?"
To this State Zoologist Sur
face replied :s follows:
"I certainly J,hankyou for your
very kind letter, making such a
definite statement concerning the
cleaning up of your trees and the
production of perfect fruit aud
the growing of healthy trees free
from scale, t.y tho use of the
lime sulfur wash, following our
directions. This is but an exam
pie of what every person in this
State could have djne had they
acted equally intelligently, faith
fully and persistently. On the
other baud I have many reports"
of persons who wanted some
thing with easier work, even if
moi e expensive, and, consequent
ly, bought the high priced t ils,
and in many cases killed their
trees or injured them so badly
that they are now turning to me,
asking what can bo done to over
come the evil effects of their for
mer action.
"i take great pi asure in re
plying in detail to the inquiries
of such persons as yourseff, be
cause it is an inspiration to know
that you act intelligently upon
tho advice given, and regard it as
worth something, even though it
be free of cost. It is, also, a
pleasure to me to know that such
efforts on my part are. not in
vain, but are really helpful. Con
corning Fans green, the formula
is one pound or sixteen ounces to
150 gallons of water for hardy
plants. For plain proportions 1
would recommend ono ouuee to
each 10 gallons. In fact one ounce
to 8 gallous will not be too strong
for potatoes. However, I should
use three or four times as much
lime as Fans green, making milk
of lime and straining it into the
water with Pam green.
"Also, on plums I would not
recommend vou to use Paris
greeu if you can get arsenate of
leid. Tho latter sticks better
and is much more to bo desired.
You can buy this ol different
firms. 1 would not spray the
plum trees until after the blos
soms have fallen and the fruit is
nearly as large as the average
pea.
To make a spray for potato
bhtfht, use three pounds of blue
stoii9 aud four or five .pounds of
lime in fifty gallons of water. If
you have potato beetles, add one
third of a pound of Fans greuu,
or ono pound of arsenate of lead
to this. I Bhould have told you
that there aro various formulan
recommended for using arsenate
varying from ono to threeor four
pounds in lifty gallons ol water,
but it has been proven that ifjyou
use a good quality of arsenate of
load, one pound in fifty gallons
will do the poisoning, just the
ttaiqe as though you used three
times as much, aud, of course,
there is less danger of injury aud
it is more economical"
