rice Leoue, are visiting their
home folks at Fort Littleton.
During the past three years Dr.
Fraker has been located at Mt.
Alten McKean county, where he
has a large practice.
The New Grenada baseball
team covered itself all over with
glory last Saturday by defeating
Saltillo in a score of 27 to 2, and
them climbing on to North Point
and laying them out to the tune
of 11 lo 14. N. G. is walking in
the middle of the road now with
a big chip on its shoulder.
There have been many Inquir
es made at the Department of
Public Instruction as to the re
quirements ne '.essary to obtain
the increase of salary for teachers
and the department has ruled
that the $5') salary can be paid
only when thi teacher has a per
manent certificate and certificate
of proficiency in teaching for
two years.
President Buchanan was a
visitor at Bedford Springs fiftv
years ago this month and while
sojourning at thu hotel he re
ceived tin! first regular message
sent across the recently complet
ed Atlantic cable. The message
was a congratulatory one from
Queen Victoria upon the comple
tion of so important an undertak
ing, and the President responded
with an answer written in a sirai
lar vein.
Mrs. A. J. Wolford, who bad
been visiting her sister, Mrs.
Anna B. Sipes in Licking Creek
township, has returned to her
home near Rainsburg, Bedford
county, and looks back upon her
visit among tho Fulton county
people, with a great deal of pleas

The Grand Army.
Attention is called to matters
pertaining to the Grand Army of
the Republic in this state by the
Mahonoy City Daily Record,
when it says :
"Of interest to every member
of the Grand Array of the Repub
he in this state are the Memorial
Day reports from Grand Army
of the Republic posts m Pennsyl
vania, received by Rev. John W.
Sayers, of Chester, who is depart
mentachaplain, which show that
5(i,000 graves of departed com
rades were decorated on Memor
ial Day. In this 1,780 cemeteries
were involved. Four hundred
and seventy five memorial ad
dresses were made. There are
523 posts in the state, but some
of the addresses did not take
place because the day was a rainy
one. Last year there were 11,
000 deaths in the Grand Army of
the Republic ranks in this state.
There are 22,772 members of the
Grand Army in good standing in
Pennsylvania.

Mr. and Mrs. George Gress
spent Saturday and Sunday in
! the home of their daughter, Mrs.
Harry Gaster at New Grenada.
Mrs. D G. Elvey, and daugh
ter Mrs John Wible and children
spent Saturday afternoon in tin
home of Samuel Scott.
Mr. and Mrs. John Shaffei
were among those who were a
the ball game Saturday. Mrs.
Shaffer has bee i in ill health for
some time. We are glad to see
her improving.
Knobsville and Dane met on
tho Dane ball ground for a game
last Saturday. A peaceful and
interesting game was played
with a score of 1211 in favor of
Dane.

Pulled Off Finger Nails.
Tlie chief ol police of Pittsburg
has been iu formed of a horrible
torture inflicted upon Wm. Mof
Ht and Eddy Malo.iey, of Pitts
burg, and James Russell, ot Chi
cago, pickpockets who were tak
en by the police of Mexico City.
The trio was arrested there and
when they refused to revoal any
thing the police pulled off their
tiuger nails with pincers. Both
hands were thus tortured. The
Washington officials have been
notified and they will investigate.
