R early Monday morn ing. The one, 20 miles from Cumberland, is reported to have been 100 feet long and 20 feet deep. The other, at Kairplay, was a small slide. The wrecking crew from Hagerstown was sum moned to clear the track. Robert Bridges, one of the wealthiest citizens of Western Maryland, died last Thursday at his home at Hancock, aged 73 years. He was educated for the Presbyterian ministry, but owing to the death of his father, entered business and made a fortune from coal, timber land and farms. Between four and live hundred farmers and their wives took a week's course at State College of the special study, and from the opening lecture on tiie selection of seeds the interest continued un abated. Because they feared the spread of small pox, persons living in or near Bendersville are supposed to have set fire to the large Gul den Flour Mill ud burned it to the ground. He admitted that the joke was on him, and that he was not infalli ble as to surprise. At 1 o'clock, theoouipauy were iuvited to partake of the bounti ful repast prepared. Illustrating the strange power of the imagination, E. F. Benson, author of "Dodo," tells this inci dent. A doctor he knew had fouud it necessary to give a patient for j many evenings an injection of morphia to enable him to get some sleep. . After a while the doctor thought ic advisable to stop the morphia, and for two nights his patient was unable to sleep, owing to great pain. On the third night the doctor, being still unwilling to administer mor phia, injected plain water instead. The man slept perfectly and awoke in the morning with what is known as a morphine mouth.
