Beautiful Indian Maiden from Oklahoma Affixed New One at Carlisle School. To the Carlisle Indian. Schools belongs the distinction of having the tirst'llag in the east with the full forty six stars. Major Mer cer, superintendent of theCarlisle School, last Wednesday evening raised the new Hag at one of the most beautiful ceremonies ever seen here. After ti o'clock the Carlisle In dian Band led to the school cam pus four troops of Indian youths in the old regulation army blue uniforms, and carrying the army rifles, together with several hun dred Indian maidens, attired in light blue gowns. The girls stood in long lines at ease during the elaborate cere rcony of dress parade, until the time arrived for raising the Stars am' stripes. As Captain Fritz Hendricks, Oklahima, and Ser geant Long, Indian Territory, held the enormous' garrison tlag aloft, Miss Eudora Cook, a strik ingly beautiful Indian maiden from Oklahoma, affixed a large white star in tha lower left hand corner of the blue field, and the newly created emblem soared aloft as the school sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee." As the t!ag reached the top of the tower ing Hag stall', the band and the school broke into "The Star Spangled Banner. At sunset the emblem was lowered to the na tional air. In the foreground during the caremony fifteen young men and eighteen girls from Oklahoma and Indian Territory were arranged in a conspicuous position as hon ored guests. Miss Cook, wear ing the national colors, occupied a staff officer's position during the review which followed the dress parade. HALF TUB WOKLI) WOINDLKS how the other halt lives. The fact that a pood thing is never wasted on the public is strikingly illustrated by the in creasing popularity of "The Phil adelphia Record." True merit is always appreciated if backed by enterprise, whether it be in r cake of soap or- in a newspaper. The spurious articlo, or the o ie that is not up to a competitive standard, is soon left behind in the race for popular favor. There are older newspapers than "The Record," and papers that have shot upward like sky rockets, with a Hash of ephemer al brilliancy, only to come down again like charred sticks. Hut "The Record" has advanced steadily and irresistably year by J.' . J year sinco 20 years ago it set tho pace as the pioneer one cent pa- , , , ' per ol America. Since then it has never retrograded; it has nev er even stood still, aud to-day its circulation exceeds that of any other newspaper published in the State of Pennsylvania, with an in llueuce that is felt all over the couutry. Continued success is never ac cidental. It Is possible to stum ble into luck as one stumbles in to a hornet's nest, with just about as much chance of winning out in the end. But luck has never entered into the success of "The Record." That success has been due to a keen insight directed to ward the public mind, an abihty to see at a glance what the pub lic wanted in the way of a news paper, and then to supply that want. "The Record" has utver attempted to force down the pub lic's throat a style of journalism that was inhereutly distasteful to it. We congratulate the manage ment of "The Record" on its ad horcuce to these principles that have marked the paper's entire career, as well as upou the excel lent business methods that have won the confidence and esteem of its great advertising patron age.
