In view of the fun which the German comic papers are always uiakinaboutths brevity of speech of the army officers in addre; sing the raok and file, it may be well tn explain, says a writer in the New York Tribune, that this fash iou dates from the days of that most taciturn and silent of Prus sian rulers, Frederick William 1 1 1, great-grandfather of thepres ent Kaiser. His utterances were of the briefest sort. On one occasiou, while staying it the Austrian baths at Tephtz, in 182!.!, he was informed by one of his generals in attendance that there was sojourning at Tephtz a Hungarian magnate equally cele orated for nis taciturnity. The King expressed the desire to see him by means of the brief com mand. "Bring him !" Au interview was arrauged without the Hungarian being in t irmed of the identity of the eld erly German officer whom he was about to meet. The King began the conversa Mon with the monof-yllableiuquiry, "Bath?" to which the other re plied equally briefly, "Drink," meaning, of course, that he took the waters internally. "Mihtaire?"contijued the King wishing to know if the Magyar was an officer in the army. To this question the other responded shading his head, "Magnate," that being the title given to the members of the Cham bcrot Peers at Budapest. "Ah !" said the King. "General ?7 inquired the mag nate. "King, " said Frederick William III by way of indicating his rank. The Hungarian noblemen dolled his bonnet, and, with the word ''Compliments," bowed and with drew. The King himself saluted, aud thus brought to a close one of the most laconic interviews that have ever taken place between a sover eign and a noble. The example thus set by the old King hoc? me the fad among the German army officers, but it cannot be said that it appeals to the present Emperor, who is, per haps, the last monarch in Christ endom whom one would accuse of being disposed to brevity of speech.
