New Women Clti.-cm.
'J hat a Woman who direets a
home and trains up children is a
responsible citizen with a large
share of state business to per form
n suggested by the title of a scr
i s of articles begun in The New
Idea Woman's Magazine for April.
"Th. Kvolntiou of Our Womeu
Citize. s: i. Their Arrival, " deal
with the lauding at Kills Isl ind
f Aomen r, Mil Uussm, Itily,
H'l in.uiy, and other peasant pro
lin ing European states; and con
siders them sis the raw material
iut of which American womeu
ituens, with American aims rind
deals are to be made. The writ
r, Miss Elizabeth Howard Wet
vood, tells of the inducements of
'ered toeinigrant womeu to corae
to America, of the dangers they
have to meet on lauding, of the
protection societies which have
sprung up to care for d afenselsss
women and girls, of the fathers
aud husbands and friends who
meet them at the end of their
painful steerage jouruey. Iuter
stiug realistic photographs are
shown. The article is optimistic
concerning the material advan
tages found by emigrants in this
country. After recounting the
story of the daughter of a Scott
ish lord, who found in managug
the hand-embroiderie of an
American sill stocking factory
the prop of failing fortune, the
writer says : "It American op
portunities cau thus induce tho
high class foreigner woman to
forsake comfortable home, fam
ily ties, social 'position what
must be the lure with which it
calls to the woman who has noth
ing hut misery to lose and every
thing that makes life livable to
win." One cannot but acknowl
edge, however, in observing the
doulJtful Paradise of our city
slums, that much has yet to be
done before our peasant immi
grants do more than grapple with
a new set ofptoblems in under
taking the lot of American citizen
ship.

The panic of I !.'!. according to
Hon. I). Hunter Patterson, of
Wctister Mills, Fulton county,
sipiaslied the project to build a
trolley line from Mercersburg to
the top of the mountain and to
MeC'oimelUbtirg- a hotel on the
peak and a park at Buchanan's
birthplace. The snberiptions for
the enterprise hud about all been
subscribed. The then President
of the C. V. K. H., the late Col. T.
1!. Kennedy, had agreed to t-du-twenty
live per cent, of the stock,
for the reason that the road would
be a good feeder U the C. V.
With the prospect that the next
legislature will give trolley com
panies right to carry freight, Mr.
Patterson thinks there ought to be
sullicient inducement lo some one
to build a trolley road into his
county t connect with a Franklin
county line.
Mr. Patterson, who is wide
awake and a student of conditions,
remarked to the Waynesboro
'Zephyr" man that he believed
Fulton county contained po.-.-ihili-tie-
for the development of very
