Let us suppose that a stretched cord or wire fixed at both ends, and let a sharp blow be given it. The ha ud or other instrument which im parted the blow was set in motion in order to do so, and its motion was one of translation, but the cord which had received the blow and to wliiih some of the motion has con sequently been truiir-ierred cannot clir.Mii'p it place, for it is fixed. We kti'v." well enough what will happen. It will commence vibrating, more or strongly and rapidly, according to Lie strength of the blow it has re ceived. We have therefore here fitc.i motion of translation changed into motion of vibration, but a sim ilar nnd quite as familiar trans formation takes place which is in visible. i.et us take a coin or any small pi.', c of metal and rub it well with it cloth or handkerchief. In a short liiiij it will become warm and if the friction be still continued even un pleasantly hot. The visible motion of l!ie hand has been transformed inio the ipvi-ible intcrwolecular vi 1. ration which we call heat. That 'heat is a form of motion" has be come a scientific truism, but it was not s,o at the commencement of the hist century, when it was still sup pocd by many to be some intangi ble hind of substance named "ca lorie," proofs to the contrary being nhuo-l simultaneously given by Da y aad Kumford at the end of the eic'..icenth cer.tury, that of the for mer consisting in melting two pieces of ice. carefully insulated from ex ternal heat, by rubbing them togeth er; that of the latter in causing wa ter lo boil by the sole means of keep ing it in continual motion. '"It is hardly necessary. to add," rays llumford, "that anything which any insulated body or system of bodies can continue to furnish with out limitation cannot possibly be a material substance, and it appears to nie exceedingly difficult if not quite impossible to form any distinct idea of anything capable of being excited and communicated in the manner heat was excited and communicated in these experiments, except it be motion." Ciood Word.?. How We Got Thermometer. It is believed that Galilei made the first thermometer about the year It was an instrument of fcla-:, consisting of a bulb' from which a blender tube depended, open at its lower end, and there plunged ia'io a vase containing some colored liquid, such as vinegar or wine. The j,'hiss bulb was heated beforo the stem was immersed, and when the contained air cooled and con tracted the fluid in the upright ther-mo.-copic tube rose to a higher level. This simple and primitive apparatus is constantly made use of on the lec ture table nowadays when some sim- !le demonstration of the laws of leat is to be made. The Ditcoverer of Hypnotism. We owe our earliest knowledge of hypnotism to thoi-e wise men of the east the Hindoos, to whom we' owe our language, our religion, our philosophy and our oriental rugs as well as cholera and the opium habit. Who first in that hind of dreams and dirt made use of hypnotic pas.iC9 to pat his fellow men into in voluntary sleep is bj obscure a per sonage in history as the discoverer of the oyster and in unimportant, for, while vve enjoy nil the material advantages of the discoveries of those unknown hcroe.i of invention, we are not obliged to consider the claims of envious contestants every year. Doc. 20, 1005. Ed. Fulton C .unty News: As I have not seen anything in your welcome paper, from sunny Kansas, for a long time, 1 think probably, a line from a sou of the old Keystone will amuse some of your readers (if it does not inter est them) especially the style in which it is written. But, then, they must make allowance for an octogenarian. The weather has been remarkably fine this fall and winter so far. We had oue snow he 18th of October. That meas ured ton inches, but it soon melt ed. We have had no cold weath er only a few little blusters. Yesterday was clear and warm; also, today is quite warm. The farmers are making good use of the warm weather, husking and hauling in their corn. There' now about 20 or 25 thousand bushels piled up in Olpe, and the larmersarestill hauling in. Ihere are two shellers running, and they are shipping corn as fast as they can get cars and find sale for it. I must stop writiug for the present. John U. Winter. 82 m Do You Suffer Sick Headache?
