Whencedoes it come? Wh.it does it say ? I stare about in hc'wildermeut, the sound is so sudden and inexphcaale. I see nothing. Then my eyes fall up on a queer figure standing with ol old Fort Frederick, Maryland's frontier defence of 148 years ago. A monument of Indian foravsand times when people in Annapolis stood in fear of an invasion. It is the last remaining vestige of the French and Indian War, and is a regular quadrangle with four has tious measuring 120 yards bo tween their salients. The walls cre from L'U to 1(5 feet in height according to the slope of the ground, o feet thick at the foun dation, tapering to 30 inches at the top. "The walls are what is tecniu- cally called "rubble" work, bound with a very strong and enduring mortar mixed probably with hy draulic lime. In August, 175(5, six months after the authority and means had been furnished by the Assembly to build the fort, it was sufficiently advanced to re ceive a garrisou aud was named Fort Frederick in honor of Fred erick, the last Lord Baltimore. I may add that steps are being 'aken for its acquirement by the government for better preserva in our national history."
