SHORT SKETCHES

It is amazing how many people
soem to pet thirsty as soon us
they reacli the top of the moun
tain. From the number who
drink of its waters, one might
think it possessed some ol the
properties of the Fountairwjf
Youth. To protect their shoes
and to keep from slipping, 1 sup
pose, ihe ladies all seem to be
equipped with rubber over-shoes
and while one ef them is swing
ing on the old fashioued swing
put up in a big locust tree in the
yard, a cry of dismay and shouts
of laughter rise simultaneously
and a rubber shoe with a slipper

Wh.it does it say ? I stare about

nothing. Then my eyes fall up
on a queer figure standing with
ol old Fort Frederick, Maryland's
frontier defence of 148 years ago.
A monument of Indian foravsand
times when people in Annapolis
stood in fear of an invasion. It is
the last remaining vestige of the
French and Indian War, and is a
regular quadrangle with four has
tious measuring 120 yards bo
tween their salients. The walls
cre from L'U to 1(5 feet in height
according to the slope of the
ground, o feet thick at the foun
dation, tapering to 30 inches at
the top.
"The walls are what is tecniu-

with a very strong and enduring
mortar mixed probably with hy
draulic lime. In August, 175(5,
six months after the authority
and means had been furnished by
the Assembly to build the fort, it
was sufficiently advanced to re

Fort Frederick in honor of Fred

I may add that steps are being
'aken for its acquirement by the
government for better preserva
in our national history."

Hdrrlbl Outrlgc Committed In Cambria Coun
ty, Last Week.
Mrs. Thomas Boggan, . of near
Patton, Cambria county, while on
her way to visit relatives, a few
days ago, was attacked by a brute
in the form of a negro and drag
ged into the underbush. She was
kept there several hours and re
peatedly assaulted, in spite of her
terrible struggles. The black
fiend preveuted the womau from
screaming by pressing his flng
ers into her temples; almostcaus
ing insensibility. A number of
times during those live awful
hours people were heard passing,
but Mrs. Boggan could make no
signal to them. When the negro
left her for a few minutes she
managed to crawl to the road
when she was soon discovered in
her terrible plight. Excitement
ran high and angry crowds were
soon organized, when the news
of the outrage spread. The sad
dest part of the horrible affair 's
that Mrs Boggan is about to be
come a mother. She now is in a
critical state.
