NEBRASKA THE STATE.
Nellie Knaulf Plndn no Mud There, and hat
(iand Time.
1 am farther away from home
than whon I last wroto, ami 17u0
foot abovo st-alovul, breathing the
air that is so light nud pure; that
is it is only puro when we havo
no dust storm which takes the
place of a snow storm. We have
had V'iry little snow, not more
than an inch at any one time. In
fact, I have never seen a milder
winter than this has been. Two
week ncro we had a tew c ld clays
1 below zero. We have found
no mud in Nebraska as it seldom
rains here in the winter.
We loft Iowa ov. iVth and at
that time it was very cold there
six inches of simw lay on the
ground: but when we reached
Omaha no snow was to be seen.
We spent an afternoon there. I
think Omaha a strange looking
city.
Wo arrived at Harvard, Zebras
ka. 10:::oi M. My cousins liar
ry and Margaret IJermond wert?
at the station to imet us. After
a six-mile drive we reached our
uncles. Ou the way out, my curi
osity was aroused at a nirgo lire
in tiie west. When told it was a
straw-stack mi lire I'm miles off I
could scarcely believe it, it seem
ed so near. When daylight came
I found we had readied the west
what J re.dlv imagined it to be.
On a dark night ono can sc the
cars from the east coming west
at a distances of more thau '()
miles away.
My uncle, Daniel Dermond told
us when we lirst came, he want
ed this to be the ploasantest visit
that we had ever made, and uow
I can sav it has proved such.
Will Sheet, says "girls I have
not had such a good time since I
left Pennsylvania, li years ago,
as I have had since you are here.
We sp.mt some time visiting
Kerr's and l-'ixens of Inland and
Hastings, formerly ot Fulton
county, L'a.
I had set my heart on going up
to Steele, N. I)., to Home-stead,
until a friend '.old me of the ex
perience lie had whilehome stead
irigouton the I'acilic Coast, and
I thought it was not such a great
thing after all, so I gave it up.
About 1'-' years ago this part of
Nebraska burned very little coal,
due to the high price, but burned
cornstalks. A machine that cut
the stocks 1" in., in length and
bound them I'm in , in circumfer
ence; but these machines were
not in use ioap, as too mucli tune
was taken up in preparing the
stocks for use, as they were
scarcely put into the stove until
they were gone.
, The Nebraska and Iowa farm
ers pride themselves in poultry
raising. In Iowa I saw IL'j geese
in one illicit on their way home
from the pasture. It was a sight
as they stretched their long necks
forward, as much as to say, "who
v.i'l reach the corn heap fir. stir"
Here, iu the west, ono seldom
sees the com put in cribs, hut
hauled on heaps, from ."MO to 10,
OUM bushels and lay in heaps until
it is shelled.
Wolf hunting is ono of Nebras
ka's winter sports. From a')0 to
1mm men turn out and close in a
t -rritory six miles square. All
are under control of the captains
eight in number, that attend on
horse back. They have from one
to two hunts a week. Those that
do not have guns, carry a huge
club instead. The wolves are
chased m front of the crowd un
til the round-up, then woe to the
wolves, for they are riddle J with
bullets. After the wolves are kill
ed they havo the blue rock shoot
log. Am proud to say my cousin
Kd ward Bheetz is one of the fluvst
marksmen. Lunch wagons are
uiwajs present, o. sirios tntuiy
spectators,
We ate our Thanksgiving din
ner at my sister's. Mrs. John
Lut.'s, Dallas Center, Iowa, our
Christmas dinner at my uncle's,
D. nermnrd, Harvard, Neh., and
New Year's dinner at my cousin
J. D. Lamp's, Inland, Neb.
Nebraska should change its
name to ''Sociahty."it would suit
it far better. If I were to give a
prize to the ono that gave the best
dinner, Mrs. Ceo. Hertzlcr, form
erly, of Humt Cabius, Pa., would
bo the lucky oue; neither would it
be given for the great display of
china, cut-glass, silver or tine ta
ble linen, that would have won the
prize, but simply what, she had to
eat. I must say Mr. Hertzler had
his eyes open and knew what he
was doing when he married Mary
Shuck.
Wo have visited in scores of
towns but have been unable to tind
a Reformed church, since I left
home, every town wo visited, the
first question I asked, "Have you
a Reformed church hero!'" Then
came that old story from every
tongue, "We have a Methodist
and Christian, but no Reformed
church.
Jn all that I havo seen the past
eight months, I saw nothing so
picturesque as the Allegheny
mountains.
He fore many more weeks pass
I expect to be with you again in
Fulton county.

Do You Want Strength?
If you want to increase your
strength you must add to and not
take from the physical. In other
words, the food that you eat must
be digested, assimihtod and ap
propriated by the nerves, blood,
and tissues boforo being expelled
from the intestines. Kodol Dys
pepsia Cure adds to the physical.
Itgives the strength to and builds
up strength in the human system.
It is pleasant to the taste t.nd
palatable, and the only combina
tion of digestants that will digest
the food and enable the system to
appropriate all of it-t health and
strength-giving qualities. Sold

was elected chairman. Devotional
exercises wore conducted by Key.
John K. Melroy.
B. C. Lainhorson made the open
ing address, in which he extended
the hospitality of the neoole of
II
Ilustontown. He asked all the
teachers, as well as others, to feel
that the institute was theirs, ei
ther for success i,r for failure, just
as they made it.
The choir then rendered a fine
selection of music, "The Song of
the Brooklet.".
Clem Chosnut then took up the
subject. "The Aims and Influences
of the True Teacher, " and the in
stitute adjourned until !l o'clock
Saturday morning.
At the convening of this session
the question, 'Kesponsibility of
tho Teacher asan Educational Fac
tor," was taken up by I). K. Strait.
The subject was also handled by
Prof, (irillith, l'rof.l'almor, Prof.

The last question, "Troubles of
the Teacher,'' was taken up by the
teachers and thorough! v discussed,
bringing before the people some
of the things that give a teacher
troubles the people do not know of.
