It is tin1 a)plieation of prin ciples of plant atid auirnal breed ing to the corn plant. The per cent, of suirar in the surarbeet has been increased from three per cent, to sixteen per cent. The ordinary beet was improved by seed select ion. so that an enormous industry has been built up and a new source of sugar given to the world. Tins has been done with a plant which seeds once in two years. Corn produces a crop ev ery year, a single seed producing a return of over a thousand fold. From this great number of off spring, varying in sizo, shape, color and composition, a selection cau be made' which will develop any feature of the seed or plant. IJy continued selection, these val uable attributes can be fixed iu the characteristics of the phmt, and the usefulness and import ance of the crop increased. To illustrate the point: We have been able by selecting ears hav ing long shanks, to increase the length of the shank nearly two feel iu live years' selection, l'.y selecting ears with tall stales, we have been able to increase the height of the stalk almost three feet iu live years. IJy selecting ears from plants having wide leaves we have been able to in crease the average width of the leaf, and by selecting ears fr in stalks having narrow leaves, we have been able to decrease the width of the leaf. ( ( Hi n ; i i ; k i:ni .( ; i- i i :i. i s. In breeding corn, a small lield (usually an acre iu size) is used. The land is prepared aud the seed bed treated as for the ordinary field. They are usually about one hundred and twenty hills long and thirty rows wide. Kach row i.s plauted 1'rum a separate ear. The barren stalks, poor stalks and all undesirable stalks, such as suckers, are removed before tie-. tassel appears. The field is protected or isolated, so that no mixture can take place from other varieties or from any source. In the fall these rows are husked separately, and the seed from the next year's crop is selected from the rows giving thc.bighcst yields er acre, of best composition, with the least barren stalks, and of the best typo. Iu tins way, the yield per acre of the variety is in creased, the quality improved and type preserved and develop ed. My this plan, we are able to give personal attention aud direct selection to the individual stalk and car, which would bo impoHsi ble iu a large field. MAUVKI.S Wt'tOKN CCLTL'KK. Thousands of practical in stances could be given to show the value of improved varieties of com. l'or instance, one Southern Illinois farmer, more progressive then the rest, was iuduced to se cure enough improved seed to plant three hundred acres as a re suit of his study of corn iu the Illinois college of agriculture. These threo hundred acres out yielded all of the other fields on hii farm more than thirty bushels per acre; and, so far as could bo determined, the fields of that sec tiou yielded about thirty bushels per aero.
