Iu other words, it is a Bible school on Sundays. It is a school for ''dis ciples. It is a school with Jesus, for men women and children to gether each Sunday with their Bibles as tho text book, to' learn about Jesus tho Master" and lessons of love. Tho "Master" with his "disciples" about him on the shore of tho Sea of Galilee, on the Mount of Olives, in the desert iu the temple, or in the synagogue iu tho upper room that was Sun day school in tho first century. Tho teaching of that time was not wholly different from the teach ing of to-day. It was a school for questions and answers, for con versations, illustration and appli-. cation. The "Master" of this tirst school did not often, I imug ine, preach a sermon an occa sional lecture but, probably, more often an answer of a ques tion from a disciple regarding tho meaning of certain things in the Old Testament, or concerning the mysteries of the new king dom. The Sunday school of to day meets only on Sunday. Not so in those days; for, then, all days were sacred, and every hour laden with opportunity to learn from the great teacher, Jesus Christ. There were times, of course, when Christ worshipped according to the established cus tom of tho templo or synagogue. There were times when he preached to the multitude before him, and times when he chose for his themes the law, the prophets, the soul, the Father, the future t iking his illustrations from life and nature. His best teaching, however, was done in the inform al way of conversation when men sought Him to inquire concerning tho things of the kingdom, or when, perchance, he had an op portunity, as at Jacob's well or on tho way to Emmaus, to speak of the deeper, personal truths of His missiou. In tho catechetical confidential interviews, so full of questions and answers so sug gestive of eagerness on the part of the taught to learn the truth, and the act on the part of the teacher, we see clearly the germ and the idea ol the Sunday school of the early church. This idea has been revived from time to time through all the centuries un til we have the Sunday school of to-day. ' Given an open Bible, an earnest believer and teacher, aud a sincere seeker and scholar, and we have the essentials of the early Sunday school yet to-di.y. Some claim that the Sunday school had its name and origin in Robert Raikes, but it has existed since Christ taught the lawyers and doctors. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and as his custom was lie went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up for to read. And there was de livered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened tho book ho found the Place where il was ""on: The nJi til ui biiu uui u la u jkjii uj uo I cause he hath annointed me to preacn ine gospel to trie poor; tie hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book aud he gave it again to the minister and sat down. Luke 6:1020. And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord, and great shall bo the poacH of thy children. Isa. 50:13, T ,n will T tpach trnnao-vp.ssr.rs thy way; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Psalm 51:13 And that they may teach their children. Deut. 0:10. Come, ye children, hearken unto mo: I will teacn you tho fear of the Lord Psalm 34:11. I will teach you the good and the right way. I Sam. 12:23. Train up a child in the way ho should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:0. Yo fathers, pro voko not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of tho Lord. Christian dispensation, Eph. 0:4 Here we have Christ, Solomon and Paul representing the work of the Sunday school. And Paul as his manner was, went in unto them and three Sabbath day reasoned with them out of the scriptures. Act. 17:2. Those who love to build each other up (by the usual processes of ediflca- tiou, the interchange, elucidation auJ application ot truth, desire also to help tho unenlightened, that they, too, may kuow the Word of tho Lord. The true Christiau is ever seeking for souls searching for inquirers, aud eu deavoring to awaken tho indiffer ent, and tho Sunday school made up of such individuals will bo characterized by tho samo spirit. The foundation of Christian char acter lies in a knowledge of the Master's will and that will is His Testament the scriptures. The man or woman can bo an efficient worker in the church on ly in proportion as tho days of youth were spent in the Sunday school. The Sunday school is a preparatory school, imparting Biblo knowledge and giving les sons of truth which, in after years, are to be fused by the power of the spirit and converted into living, throbbing energies of character. Beyond the limits of the church, beyond the homes of believers, and beyond the bounds even of Christian civilization, are neglected millions to whom the very alphabet of religion is an un known thing, and familiar quota tions from Holy Writ a strange tongue. What a work to bo done ! Children neglected by parents aud pastors, and ungodly men and children growing up here in Christian America iu absolute ig uorance, as far as the Biblo and Christianity is concerned, for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. Heb. 8: 11. Lit tle innocent feet patter about on the steps of stately cathedral, not knowing save in senseless pro fanity, the name of the God to whom it is dedicated. Heathen crowds, indeed, in the very cen ters of Christiau civilization. Let tlie Sunday school open the door, aud the Bible teacher enter. It is the dutv of every father and mother on Sunday morning to tako their children to Sunday school or see that they are in the Sunday school. Jesus, the great head of the church, said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is tho kingdom of heaven. Hannah gave her son Samuel to the Lord. How many homes today has God blessed with bright little boys and girls to make the hearts of the parents happy. We see their smiles and hear their little steps across the lloor as ihey speak to us as if to say, "Father, mother, give me a religious training that I may be like Jesus and follow him, and go to church, Sunday school, aud do something for Jesus ; that my heart may be prepared while young for Jesus to live in." The Sunday school is a part of the church of Christ, for there were children when Jesus was on earth. He said, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into tho kingdom of heaven. Matt. 18: In I John 2:1 the apostle speaks of "My little children, I write unto you." Man is a free moral agent, capable of choosing for himself; therefore, If the young mind is trained in the Sun day school in the Bible about Christ, it will grow up and choose to serve Christ instead of the Evil One. The Sunday school ideal is three fold in its nature. The spirit should prevail in every Sunday school. It should stand for the promotion of the Divine life. And this every Sunday school is an organization for the communication of truth to the ig norant, tho young and the sus ceptible to whom this world is fascinating and leading on. The Sunday Bchool is a prepar atory institution in which we re ceive systematic training in the letter of the law of God. Christ said, Go, teach all nations. The gospel must be carried beyond the present reach of the pulpit, church service, pastor or church society. Even to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. The igno rant and the prejudiced must be taught. The ground must be bro keu and the field prepared for the final millennial harvest, and in this great work the Sunday school must do her part. "Go out Into tlie highways and hedges and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled." Luke 14:23. Notice. Contracts given out for peeling bark; also, a farm hand wanted.
