New York has subscribed near
ly $80,000 for the McKinley mon
ument at Cuntou, most of it being
given in New York city.
The electric light tower of Au
rora, III., constructed in 1883 and
the pioneer installation of that
type, have been taken down.
Tho Chicago Coliseum, in which
can seat 15,000 people and is lo
cated in the center of the city is
to bo utilized as an indoor sum
mer garden.
The Salvation Army is floating
an issue of $130, 000 of bonds to
provide homes for the poor. On
lile are applications, from more
than 1,000 families anxious to
leave New York city and settle on
farming land.
One of the last wishes express
oil by a lady who died recently
near San Francisco was that her
favorite motor car should be taken
out to sea and sunk in deep water.
The deathbed order has been duly
obeyed.
Union Pacific railroad officials
have created consternation in the
Boulder oilfields by announcing
that nearly all the deeds for pro
perty sold during the past six
years contain a clause expressly
reserving the mineral on the land.
According to a rough estimate
prepared by the navy department
7,500 medals will be required for
the officers and men of thenavy
and marine corps who participat
ed in the engagements in and ad
jacent to the West Indies during
tho war with Spain.
An application for naturaliza
tion at Newport, R. I., the other
day was asked the usual question,
"Do you belong to any societies
to overthrow the United States
government?" "Yes," replied
the would be citizen promptly; "I
belong to f he carpenters' union.

TO MY FRIENDS.
It is with joy I tell you what
Kodol did for me. I was troubled
with my stomach for several
months. Upon being advised to
use Kodol, I did so, and words can
not tell the good it has done me.
A neighbor had dyspepsia so that
he had tried most everything. I
told him to use Kodol. Words of
gratitude have come to me from
him because I recommended it.
Geo. W. Fry, Viola, Iowa. Health
aud strength, of mind and body,
depends on the stomach, and nor
mal activity of the digestive or
gans Kodol, the great recon
structive tonic, cures all stomach
and bowel troubles, indigestion,
and dyspepsia. Kodol digests any
good food you eat. Take a dose
after meals.
CROWNS IN PAWN.
On four occasions has the
Crown of England been in pawn.
The most frequently quoted is
that which happened in 1880,
when Iticharcl II was driven to
this last resource to replenish his
depleted treasury. The crown,
however, must either have been of
comparatively little value, or the
merchants of London, to whom
he pledged it, adepts at driving a
shrewd bargain, for the amount
received, as vouched for by the
Kiug's receipt when redeeming
his regalia, was but 2000.
Richard, however, was but fol
lowing iu the steps of his father,
Edward III, who, pressed for
money, did not hesitate to place
the symbol of royalty in pledge
with the Bishop of Winchester
for tho comparatively handsome
sum of 13,500. Henry III,
impoverished by 'Me struggle
against his barons, and Henry V,
by his war in Franco, likewise
hypothecated tho crown! Charles
II, also, would doubtless have
done so; and; iudeod, the pardon
and subsequent , pensioning of
Colonel Blood seem to "point to the
fact that that adventurer, when
he atteuiptod to steal the regalia,
was acting with the King's cou
nivauce. Tits-Bits.

LONGEVITY AND PERSONAL
HABITS.
Those who live to an extreme
old age are probably the result of
a long series of selected lives,
further fortified by exemplary per
sonal habits, like tho Jews, who,
for 2000 years, have been compell
ed to live iu crowded quarters of
cities, with minimum of air and
light, until nature's selective pro
cesses, together with their rigid
adherence to the admirable sani
tary code of Moses, have produc
ed a stock that can endure almost
anything, with little apparent in
jury. The Ghetto in Rome was
the healthiest quarter in the city,
and at the present day the Jewish
quarter of New York, the most
crowded, and until recently, the
dirtiest, part of town, has the
lowest death rate. Persons with
such constitutions, being, in a
large measure, proof against mor
bific influences, are generally iu
jurod only by their own excesses,
and it will be found as a rule, that
centenarians have been persons
of this class, who have seldom
been ill in their lives, who have
had the contagious diseases of
childhood lightly, if at all, who
have always been temperate in, all
things, light eaters and drinkers,
slow to wrath, able to control
their passions and emotions, and
usually leading a placid, uneven
ful life. Such conditions can be
brought about by sanitary laws
only as a result of long continued
teaching and pressure extending
over many generations, and may
not be perceptible in the race for
a hundred years to come. Our
first parents wore driven from
the Garden of Eden for fear they
would be come immortal, and
their descendants have lost bo
rauch ground that only one out of
millions is able to reach physio
logical limit of lifo, which certain
ly should be 100 years, and possi
bly 120. Tho Century.
