Miss Minnie Reisuer who had
been spending a few days at her
uucle Lew's iu Laucaster return
ed last Friday evening accompan
ied by her cousin Will Reisner.
They drove from Lancaster to
Gettysburg Wednesday, spent
Thursday on the battlefield, and
drove up from Gettysburg Fri
day. Mrs. Daniel Mock, who has
boeu spending sometime with
her daughter, Mrs. S. S. Kapp at
Carlisle, returned home last Fri
day, accompanied by her daugh
ter Mrs. N. J. Sinnott of Phila
delphia. Mrs. Sinnott has been
in the hospital, she having an
operation performed for appendi
citis. Her friends will be glad to
learn that she is convalescing.
Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. W.
B. McDowell of Lemaster, died
last Wednesday night. Its little
twin brother died about the mid
dle of May. Mrs. McDowell was
M iss Laura Kendall of the Cove.
The parents have the sympathy
of their many friends on this side
of the mountain.
The town council of Mercers
burg recently granted a franchise
for the installation of a water
plant which the promoters prom
ise shall be in operation within
the next year ; and now they have
granted a franchise for the estab
lishiug of an electric light plant
which must be in operation with
in six months or the franchise
will be forfeited.
Dr. George W. Ludwig, of
Chambersburg, whose illness
was noted in the News last week,
died iu Baltimore, Monday even
ing of last week from intestinal
tuberculosis Dr. Ludwig was
proprietor of Ludwig's Jewelry
store iu Chambersburg for years.
For some years past he has been
practicing as an oculist in Cham-
bersburg. He was aged 40 years.

Birthday Surprise.
A number of young people as
sembled at the home of Miss Lin
na A. Doshong in Licking Creek
township last Saturday evening
to celebrate her birthday anniver
sary. It was a very agreeable
surprise to Miss Deshong, for the
visitors had with them a beauti
ful tea-set, which they presented
to the fair young lady as a token
of their friendship.
Among those present were,

Uockensmith, Cora Hoop, Jennie
Wink, Ella Kline, and Messrs.

a delightful eveniug spent.

On last Thursday evening J.Ed
gar Clouser died at the residence
of his father, John B. Clouser, in
Altoona, after an illness which ex
tended over a period of six
months. He was aged 25 years,
(J months and 18 days.
The deceased was a member of
Pride of Mountain City Council
No. 472, Junior Order United
American Mechanics, and of
Wopsononock Tribe No. 305, Im
proved Order of Red Men.
Funeral services were held at
the Walnut Avenue Methodist
Episcopal church, Altoona, Fri
day eveniug, and tho remains
taken to Everett for iutermeut
on Saturday foreooou.
Besides his father heissurvived
by the followiug brothers and sis
ters : Clinton W. and D. Burton,
aud Miss Laura V. and Mrs. Nel
lie B. Walters.

William S. Strait.
At the ripe age of SI years, 9
month, and 25 days, Mr. Wil
liam S. Strait of Pleasaut Ridge,
passed peacefully to his long rest
on Sunday June 22, 1902.
Grandfather Strait was an ex
cellent old gentleman, ho having
been a consistent member of the
Christian church for three score
years. Ho was also a veteran of
tho Civil War, having been a mem
ber of tho 158th Pennsylvania In
fautry.a member of Gen. D.B. Mc
Kibbiri Fost, No. 402 G. A. R. at
Pleasant Ridge.
Tho funoral occurred on Tues
day June 24, aud hiH remains were
borno to their last resting place
by six old comrades in arms. Ho
is survived by one son aud three
daughtera, II. II. Strait, Mrs.
Swope and Mrs. Slaves of this
county, and Mrs, Decker of Everett.

The home of Mrs. Lucinda
Cutchall, of Harrisonville, was Mi
scene of a very pretty home wed
ding last Thursday morning,
when her daughter, Miss Bessie,
and Mr. Edward Sharp', son of
John Sharpe of Licking Creek
township, were united in mar
riage by Rev. S. J. Pittenger, of
Shirley sbu rg. The ceremony
was witnessed by only tho friends
of tho family.
Among those present from a
distance were the bride's sisters
Mrs. Kate Deshong, of Wells Tan
nery, Mrs. Carrie Gibson, Hope
well, and brother Will and family
of Big Cove. The News extends
congratulations to tho happy
young couple.

spent the past two weeks here.
The family resided here until
about two years ago. During
her visit here she sold tho home
place to John Cutchall.

week ago from tho Spangler barn

and Mrs. Henry Wilson.
John Everhart who had a sun
stroke sometime ago, was able
the other day to get up to this
place; but on his way home, he
took a relapse and was taken in
by tho two belles of this place
and taken to his home.
Saturday the 2th a birthday
party was given at the home of
James Cartnack, it being in honor
of their nine-year-old sou Owen
Guy's birthday. A number of
little guests were present, who
had a tine time.

An adjourned court, principal

ment of a guardian for Mary Kirk,
was held ou Friday, June 27.

The petition set forth that Mrs.
Kirk was not of sound miud and
in consequence not competent to

and the appointment of a guar
dian was asked for. After hear1
ing the testimony of several wit
nesses the court slated that he
was clearly of the opiniou that
Mrs. Kirk, owiug to weakness of
