Mr. Depew, of New York, addressed
the Senate in advocacy of the bill appro
priating $10000.000 for the purchase of
2.000.000 acres of land for a national
fnre-t reserve in Virginia. North Caro
lina. South Carolina. Georgia. Alabama
and Tennessee. It is stated by the com
mittee reporting the measure that "it
may fairly be urged that the establish
ment of this forest reserve in the region
of the Southern Appalachian Mountains
is a matter of great national importance;
that owing to the peculiar conditions
existing in this region the establishment
of this reserve need not necessarily be
accepted a a precedent for the estali
hshment cf similar reserves elsewhere
m the Ea-t."
Mr. Depew said the project was fa
vored by President Roosevelt and by the
Secretary of Agriculture, and federal ac
tion was iustined fully by public neces
sity. He said the mist favorable results
might be expected from the establish
ment of the re-erve: that within ten
years the great hardwood forests in the
proposed reserve would le destroyed en
tirely. Such a result onld be disastrous
to the States affe-ted and the entire
country.
At the conclusion c f Mr. Depew's re
marks. Mr. Hale said that the Senate
could not fail to be impressed by the
great importance of the subject. He had
not been aware of the extent of the land
to be purchased, but be thought that
some action ought t- be taken upon the
matter at this se.-ion.
