Ton sometimes see a woman whose
old age is as exquisite as was the per
fect bloom of her youth. You wonder
how this has come about. You wonder
bow it is that her life has been a long
happy one. Here are some of the
reasons:
She knew how to fovget disnirreeablp
things. ..tfi,K.
She kept her nerves well in hand,
and inflicted them on no one.
She mastered the art of saying pleas
ant things.
She did not expect too much from
her friends.

She retained her illusions, and did
not believe all the world wicked and
unkind.
She relieved the miserable and sym

She never forgot that kind words and
a smile cost nothing, but are price

She did unto others as she would he

Silver Is the dominant note In many
new gowns and promises to become
as ubiquitous as the oft-repeated gold
of lust year. Probably we shall come
in time to the bronze and copper age
in regard to matters sartoriul and mo
ilistic. but at present the craze for the
fair white metal has spread like aa
epidemic through the world of fashion.
Not only are we introducing it into
our gowns and repeating it in our
headgear, but we are cramming our
rooms with silver frames and covering
our occasional tables with countless
silver miniature representations of
Dutch furniture as well as every de
scription of culinary article and are
even threatened with a return to silver

have an unhappy way of catching ir

The Lataet Scarf.
nave you seen the new, the very
new, scarf? It can be made of fur or
lace, of a strip of cloth or a two

method of wearing It Is unlquo. It is
brought nrouud the shoulders, be It

ter what Its texture, and fastened upon
the bust with a pin. The pin should
be a large one, and there are handsome
medallions that come for this purpose,
and lovely miniature pins the size of a
young butter dish. Little sable scarfs,
not as wldo as three fingers, come to be
thrown around the ueck and pinned
upon the chest.

which It would otherwise present to

with white cloth, and shows a braided
design in black, dark blue and silver.
The Eton has pagoda sleeves, with un

a narrow wristband, with design of
the same embroidery. The skirt Is on

and variety with each season as It
comes. This novel design, with the
deep pleats at the shoulders, is emi

as well as to wool and silk walstings.
As shown It Is of white pique with em.
broidored dots und trimming of needle
work, and Is made without the lining;
but taffeta, moire velours, flannel and
the like are more satisfactory when
the fitted lining is used.
Tho foundation Is smoothly fitted

the shoulders, simply drawn down ia
gathers at the waist Hue; but the fronts
are laid lu deep pleats at the shoulders
