He has quite a reputation as a strong player in the Cumberland Valley. A West Virginia lumberman, while sawing a poplar log at his saw mill, found an auger hole plugged by a peg. On removing it this was found to contain five $ 20 gold pieces, bearing dates be tween 1850 and I860. The sup position is that the 'gold was se creted during the Civil War. Haunah, wife of John DuBois of Philadelphia, died on Monday night, July 1, 1901. The remains were taken to the residence of Mrs. Penelope Evans at Everett, last Thursday. The funeral ser vices were held in the Methodist Episcopal Church, and interment followed in the Everett cemetery. John DuBois was cashier of the Everett Bank for a number of years, and Mrs. DuBois was a sister of Mrs. Hattie L. Tritle, formerly a resident of this place, but now of Philadelphia. At Greeusburg, Pa., a count was made recently for one day of the nu m ber of men who went into six saloons of the town and of those who went into six churches with result as follows: 1561 men entered the six saloons and 4"o men entered six of the largest churches. Twelve churches were watched and 757 men entered the twelve making an average of 93 men to the church, while the sa loons average was 290 men. The average to the four leading churches was 78. Last Monday evening a livery team, reported as belonging to May & Weeks, of Everett, passed through this place enroute to McConnellsburg. The horses showed signs of hard driving, and before reaching their destination oue of the horses was overcome by the heat and was left on the mountain. The driver returned that night, and attempted to drive it to Everett. He got as far as Green Hill, where the horse drop ped dead. It was hauled out in the woods near by, where it lies exposed, a menace to the public health. The schedule of the mail route from Ilarrisonville to Burnt Cab ins, has been changed. It leaves the Cabins in the morning in stead of the afternoon. The Hancock mail departs from Ilar risonville in the evening, and re mains all night at Pleasant Ridge, the home of the contractor, Si mon Deshong. George C. En sly, who has been employed in Johnstown has rt turned to his home at this place. Homer L. Sipes, is engaged with his new binder, in cutting the 40 acres of grain for Mrs. Jennie Daniels, on the Daniels' homestead.
