Antitoxin for Fourth of July The (57 tetanus antitoxin stations throughout the Commonwealth have received their supplies from the De partment of Health and are ready to meet the usual Fourth of July demands. The antitoxin will be furnished without cost to the poor and the stations are so located that every part of Pennsylvania is within easy reach of one. It is essential that the tetanns antitoxin be adminis tered within 24 to 48 horn's after the wound has l>een inliicted. Any physician can secure an im munixing dose of 1500 units free upon applying to a distributing station, on certifying that it is for the treatment of a person too poor to pay. In urging the prompt use of an titoxin to prevent lock-jaw follow ing explosive and other wounds, Dr. Dixon Commissioner of Health says: "Do not consider any such wounds trival, send for a physician at once. If it is impossible to promptly secure his attendence, wash out the wound thoroughly with hot, boiled water, remove every particle of foreign matter and until the doctor arriver, apply a wet dressing; clotlis saturated with a solution made by adding a tea spoon full of salt to a pint of boiled water." The Antitoxin is in the hands of A. H. Busclihausen, Laporte, for Sullivan County and can be gotten from him. For the Onion Worm It appears that the onion plants are unsualy badly attacked this year by maggots or worms which feed within them, A prominent horticulturist in the eastern part of Pennsylvina wrote to State Zoologist Surface, at Harrisburg. asking what to do for this pest, and received the fol lowing reply which will be read with interest by all persons who have gardens: ' 'The insect attacking your onions is, no doubt, the onion Maggot or onion Worm, it is best prevented by pouring a quart of kerosene oil into a half bushel of sand and stirring it well and scattering it over the ground around the plants at the time the onions are set out, this repels the fly which lays the egg from which the maggot hatches. There is no remedy after the onion is once infested, The addition of a little turpentiue to the kerosene also increases the repelling value, The sand can be scattered very thinly indeed quite near to the newly set plants or onion sets.'' To Produce Good Grapes A Lebanon county grape grower wrote to Prof. H. A. Surface, and asked him whether he should spray his grapes or bag them. The re ply of Professor Surface is as follows: "It is possible to spray your grapes with arsenate of lead and Bordeaux mixture and have good results. Use three pounds of blue stone and three pounds of lime in fifty gallons of water to make the Bordeaux mixture. To this add two pounds of arsenate of lead. Spraying once every two or three weeks during the principal part of the growing season will be sufticent, and will give you good returns. "Of course, putting them in paper bags gives excellent protection, and if a person has only a few vines, I would recommend bagging them. This is done by pinninga two-pound bag around each cluster of grapes shortly after the blossoms fall. It -keeps away insects and disease germs, and also it keeps the grapes nice and clean. When you have more than can lie economically bag ged, the best treatment is to spray them well and thoroughly." Subscribe for the News Item.
