Reader are you a subsejiber, if
not why not ? It only repuires
25 cents to read this paper until
after election, and possibly the
paper you are reading may have
laid around until it is filled with
disease germs. Take no chances,
but have a clean, open, honest
paper at first reading.
Wasted Money.
The last legislature increased the
salaries of Judges. This was un
necessary, and those who voted for
it did not have the interest of the
people or the welfare of the State
in mind. No law judge under the
old Act was underpaid, many of
them received entirely too much.
Thousands of dollars of the State's
| money have been diverted from the
schools and roads by this bill, and
distributed as an annual gift to
public officials already overpaid.
Very few Common Pleas Judges
ever earned as attorneys as much
money as they received before this
new increase, probably not to
exceed half a dozen. One or two
successful lawyers, who were made
judges resigned because the salary
was inadequate. But these were
corporation lawyers. They desired
to see the prefix "Hon." to their
names, and have the people call
them "Judge". Four thousand
dollars a year is much more than
the annual income of the average
lawyer who becomes a judge. It
is sufficient to command the high
est average intelligence of the bar.
The Item certainly favors fair pay
for public officials, but we certainly
do not favor unfair pay for political
pulls. A large medal should be
made for our last legislative, and
of course paid for by the state.
Unlawful Hunting.
It would hardly seem necessary
to state that the season to lawfully
hunt for any game in this section
has not opened yet. But if rumor
is correct some of our young sports
are putting themselves in a position
where they are likely to have a job
of working for the county at a dol
lar a day.
Owing to the many large lires
which in the last few years have
burned over nearly all the forests
near Laporte game birds have be
come very scarce. To shoot them
before they are fairly feathered out
is a shame and a person gfiilty of
doing this shouldn't expect, and
would probably have no mercy
shown him.
