Slate Makers.
We have information that a
formal meeting of the Republican
Slate makers was held at La Porte
on Thursday evening at the Court
House. What was agreed upon
we do not know, but it is rumored
that the slate was rearranged, and
a nearly new set of men agreed up
on for the county offices whose
names will be announced when it
is proper for the public to be in
formed.
The News Item, under its new
management is a Republican paper,
but Independent, meaning we are
not dependent on the bosses, big or
little. We belive that candidates
for local offices should be known
long enough before the primaries
to give voters an opportunity to
make inquires, and fix upon their
choice with care and deliberation.
The people of Sullivan County are
really more interested in who coin
pose the next Board of Com
missioners than they are what party
controls it. The local Democrats
are better favored than the Re
publicans in having ample time to
canvaßS the merits of their cand
idates.
The News Item favors honest,
clean, intelligent and able men for
county offices, Republican prefer
red when they fill the requirements.

Xew Editor at Laporte.
Bert M. Van Dyke, for the past
eighteen months editor of the La
porte News Item, has resigned his
position, and John B. English of
this place, has taken charge of the
business. John has been until
quite recently employed 011 the
Mirror, so we know all about his
qualities and qualifications. 11 is
worst fault is in being so young,
but if people will be patient and
give him a chance, he will remedy
that. As a printer, he has good
taste, is studious and observing,
and while he would be able to
make good almost anywhere now,
experience will do much for liiin.
As a writer lie has a natural ap
titude for the business and does ex
ceedingly well for a person who has
in the past had so few opportun
ities. Hurrah for John! Sucesu al
