FOSS ELECTED GOVERNOR
Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate
Wins by 24,000 Plurality.
Boston, Nov. 9. —Congressman Eu
gene N. Foss was elected governor of
Massachusetts by a plurality of 24,000.
The remainder of the Republican tick
et went into office.
The defeat of Governor Eben S.
Draper, the Republican nominee, Is
due to the agitation over the increased
cost of necessities and the outcry that
the Payne-Aldrich tariff bill is one of
the chief causes.
The incoming legislature will show
large Democratic gains, but there are
still enough Republicans to insure the
re-election of Senator Lodge, even
should tkere be a fusion of Democrats
and what few anti-Lodge Republicans
who may have crept in.
Rhode Island Elects Republicans.
Providence, R. 1., Nov. 9. —The re
election of Republican congressmen,
Republican governor and state ticket
and a Republican mayor of Providence
is indicated. For governor, Lewis A.
Waterman, the Democratic candidate,
has reduced over 1000 Governor Poth
ier's figures of last year, when Pothier
had a plurality of nearly 12,000. In
spite of this inward showing Republi
cans claim Pothier's re-election by at
least 5000 plurality and the election
of the rest of the state ticket is con
ceded.
Result In North Carolina.
Raleigh, M. C., Nov. 9.—Steadman
Dem., for congress in the Fifth dis
trict, polled heavier majority than was
anticipated. May reach 2500, defeating
Blair, Rep., for seat now held by
Moorehead, Rep. Cowles, Rep., in the
Sighth, is re-elected by reduced ma
jorlty. It Is impossible to tell at pres
ent whether Grant, Rep., is re-ele<?ted
in the Tenth. Majority will not be over
500 either way. Mcintosh, Rep., polled
a heavy vote in the Ninth, but Webb,
Dem., la re-elected. The state went
Democratic by 30,000.
Republicans Lose In Illinois.
Chicago, Nov. 9. —The Republican
state committee claims the sure elec
tion of only six out of the twenty-five
congressmen from Illinois. It was con
ceded that eight were still in doubt,
with the probability that most of the
Republicans would be defeated, and
the other eleven districts were con
ceded to the Democrats. The Demo
crats have but six members in the
present Illinois delegation,

velt was 52 years old on Thursday
(Oct. 27) but some folks will con
tinue to call him Teddy." Yes,

Arrangements are being made
to make the new postal savings
banks the depositories of small
sums of money for children, and
to facilitate this saving the post

If winter has come for keeps,
and expects to stay with us until
the April sun chases him off, as
some are inclined to think, he has
not seleced a very opportune time
for his arrival. The heavy fall of
snow which covered the earth on
Friday and Saturday of last week
came as a surpise to the builders,
painters and farmers many of
whom have unfinished work which
they were forced to abandon. In
many places apples are still on the
trees and garden truck is for a
great part resting in its summer
home.
We recently heard a man com
plaining because an opportunity to
bid on a certain job of work was
lost for the reason that he had not
known of it. Bids for this job
were advertised in the News Item,
Upon investigation it was found
that he was one of the few who, al
though once subscribers do not now
take the home paper, and thus, by
neglecting to again subscribe, for
reasons known to himself he has
possibly let many times the price
of subscription slip through his
hands. Moral—Again throw in
your hook; there are more fish in
the brook.

Editor Newell of the Canton
Sentinel, gives some timely and
sensible advice to husbands in the
following: Don't kick because
you have to button your wife's
waist. Be glad your wife has a
waist and doubly glad you have
a wife to button a waist for; some
men's wives have no waists to
button. Some men's wives' waists
have no buttons onto button.
Some men's wives who have waists
with buttons onto button don't
care a continental whether they
are buttoned or not. Some men
don't have any wives with waists
with buttons 'on to button any
more then a rabbit.
