Duty of the Keystone State.
State Chairman Walton and his
associates in the direction ol' the
Republican campaign are highly
gratified over the enthusiastic re
ception of Representative Tener
and other candidates 011 their tour
of the State. Mr. Tener and his
associates on the ticket have made
an excellent impression and have
aroused the Republicans of the
counties they have visited to a
high pitch of enthusiasm. In his
speeches Mr. Tener has emphasiz
ed the good result of Republican
admiiistration in Pennsylvania.
He has made it plain that he in
tends that his admiiistration shall
be as satisfactory to the people as
that of Governor Stuart. Kvery
far minded man in this State will
concede that the Republican party
has never presented a better ticket
than the one before the people this
year. The delegates of the Ilarris
burg convention could not 1 have im
proved upon the selections they
made. The ticket is composed of
able and public spirited men.
There is not the slightest doubt
ol Republican success in Pennsyl
vania this year. Mr. Tener and
the other candidates 011 the State
ticket will lie elected. That is
clear to everybody. Rut the Re
publican majority should be so
large that it w ill be progressive.
If the Republicans goto the polls
they w ill not only elect the State
ticket but will elect a solid Re
publican delegation in Congress,
and a State Legislature that w ill
choose a Republican United States
Senator. Then the Keystone State
will have done its duty. It will
have proclaimed to the country
that it stands uncompromisingly
by the principles of the Republican
party in State and nation. It will
have set a wholesome example in a
year when enemies of the Republi
can party are active, alert and hope
ful.

Pennsylvania Not "luiggard" in
Conduct of Financial Affairs.
11l former papers the writer
thinks ho showed conclusively that
PeiMisylvni»iti has never been a
"laggard" state in the constitution
of internal improvements for the
transportation of her coal, iron,
lumber, petroleum, and farm pro
ducts to market, and of obtaining
needful supplies in return. He en
devored to show that Pennsylvania,
instead of being a "laggard" state
in the cause of education, was a
niong the very first to recognize
the importance of the subject and
provide means for tin* education of
all the children in the common
schools.
It is now proposed to show that
the old Keystone state has not been
••laggard", delatory, or slow in pro
viding ample means for the yearly
payment of her governmental ex
penses. and the extinguishment of
a public debt of more than $40,000-
000 incurred principally in digging
canals.
The Republican party, which has
been in control of the state govern
ment most of the time for fifty
years, has been unjustly charged
with burdensome and inequal tax
ation of the people with the mis
management of the public funds ex
travagance in the public expendi
tures and "grafting" by the pub
lic officials. These untruthful
charges caused by party animosity,
w ill lie renewed and repeated daily
and hourly from now until after
election in November next. Let us
examine this matter a little.
To provide for the yearly govern
mental expenditures, to pay the in
terest 011 the public debt and finally
extinguish it was 110 small under
taking and could only have been ac
complished by exceedingly able and
far-sighted men who have been at
the head of the government and
who have successfully accomplish
ed the desirable result. Every dol
lar of the public debt has been paid
and the interest stopped. Taxes
have been imposed on the rail-roads,
banks and other rich corporations,
which provides ample revenue for
all purposes without taxing farm
ers' lands.
Formerly the farmers' state tax
was nearly as much as their county
tax. but now every cent of it has
been removed. In the entire fre
dom from any debt Pennsylvania
is not behind but far ahead of near
ly all other states, and in their re
lease from all land taxation, the
farmers of this state are favored
and benefited above the agricultur
ists in most other parts of the Un
ion. The editors and orators who
declare that Pennsylvania is a
"laggard" state, that her patient
people have been misgoverned,
plundered and disgraced by her
public officials, have 110 evidence
whatever to support their charges.
