"Easy Beading" Page. KrJrTV * -"taf ■ Mmi THE UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD. For ages, men with ideals have studied and labored to bring to pass that condition of affairs in which selfishness and cruelty should be eliminated from the code of society, and the more excellent way of charity and world fellowship be enthroned to rule the des tinies of the race. The prophets and sages of history have all stood on this Pisgah, and with more or less optimism have heralded, hail ed, beckoned; but all have found a grave on Nebo's slopes on this side of Jordan. The heave and surge of the red tide of universal brother hood has buckled the rocks and threatened the wharves of modern ethics, the dove of peace from the ark of love is fluttering above the waste of waters, waters burdened with uncounted tons of battle shins bristling with defiance. Some day the dove will flit home with an olive leaf in her mouth, betokening the advent of international peace. Some of us have been very impatient at the delay, but most of us have learned that the accomplishment of great reforms filter slowly through the gray clay of the human brain. Time is long and man is immortal, so there is no need of haste. Sometimes we fret and chafe at the slow progress of civilization, wish ing for the consummation of human perfection in our own day, but bless you, it matters but little to us, for we will be there and know all about it when the Master of destinies leadsman into his inheritance. The artisan of the universe keeps chiseling away. Prin cipalities, thrones, dynasties, We expect to carry this "Easy Heading" page in the News Item regularly. The topics will vary from time to time. We have conducted a department of this ind in the New Albany Mirror for the past ten yeaas, and it has been cordially ceived by the readers of that paper. Don't judge by this effort, wait awhile. governments, and creeds crumble beneath the tooth ot time. Every human device and structure will ultimately succomb to the flat level of the Supreme purpose. The wheat that shall abide after the flail and fan of the omni potent thresher will be the love we have shown toward one another during life's lit tle day. But this is not what we in tended to discuss—at least it is not localized as we intended. This week we are taking up a new work in the publication of the Laporte News Item. This brings us in touch with the people of Sullivan county. We have, during the past fif teen years been having busi ness dealings and social inter course with a large number of Sullivan county people, and take pleasure in saying that we have found them friendly, honorable and just. hat we wish to do in the first place, is to forget that there is a county line, forget every particle of clanishness and regard our fellows on both sides of the line as brothers. How far this feeling ot broth erhood will be allowed to run depends upon the breadth of the individual mind. A man or woman who can gather the whole world—white, red, yellow , brown and black in the arms of affectionate broth erhood, is fulfilling the Divine conception when He created the human heart. - We have our various creeds, political preferences and so cial classes, our pride of race and country, these are but incidents along the way, and have no more place in the jewel casket of eternity than the snorting and shrieking of the locomotive that hauls our car to its destination has upon our finished journey. There are a few things worth while in this life. One of them is the publication of a newspaper that labors un tiringly for the welfare of its clientele and for the uplifting of humanity everywhere. It is our purpose in entering upon this new field of work, to give our readers as much more than their money's worth as lies in our bones to do. We are not in business for our health, neither are we in it altogether for profit. It lakes a little money to keep a newspaper alive, that must be forthcoming or the sheriff will write a little article for publi cation; but the principal reas on we are in the publishing business is to be useful to our fellow man. The sacred sage said: "Be hold how good and how pleas ant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity." When love rules, all the baser ele ments are overthrown. An old philosopeer made the quaint assertion that the only things worth while in the world are "love, and bread and butter." That's a re markably simple creed, but when you come to simmer it down to elemental essence it is not far from the truth. Life is a pretty short prop osition, even when the span is extended to the uttermost limit; and when we think ser iously of it in that light, we blush with shame to think we could contemplate for a min ute the unworthy action of driving a sharp bargain, or taking by fraud, (commonly called shrewd business tact) anything from our brother man. The day will dawn at last, the watchmen upon the tow - ers of time have heralded the dawn many times, but each time the glowing east has been lighted by a glaring com et of human illusion. The year of jubilee is not yet, but it will surely come. The joy ous day when "Righteousness shall cover the earth as the waters cover the sea." Then shall come the general ac knowledgement of the univer sal brotherhood and kinship of the whole race of mankind. We who have a little light can help much toward hastening the glad day.
