Mrs. Eliza McKean died at her
home in Towanda Sunday, July
IS, at the remarkable age of 101
years and eight months. She had
been a resident of Bra.lford county
since IS2'2.
Mr. David B. Miller of Bernice,
and Miss Agnes Collins of Mildred,
were joined in wedlock by Rev.
Joseph K. Freed, pastor of the
Presbyterian Church at Bernice,
June 30, 1909.
Two dwelling houses at Jami
son City were burned down on
Tuesday. They were [the proper
ties of Perry Hess and Miles Mil
ler. The lire started from a de
fective Hue in the Hess residence,
and the loss was about 82.000.
The excursion from Hughesville
on Tuesday numbered about SOO.
Picture Rocks people will picnic at
Mokoma to-day [Thursday] and
another excursion to Mokoma is
scheduled for Saturday.
Charley Hopfer of Muncy Val
ley, while at work peeling bark
near Celestia, on Thursday morn
ing had the misfortune to cut of!
part of his left foot. It was sev
ered about half way between the
toes and instep.
Edward YanPelt, of William
sport, who was injured last Thurs
day while unloading the engine
for the merry-go-round at Moko
ma, is improving nicely and will
soon be around.
Carl O. Bird, of Estella. and Misfc
Jessie Wrede, of town, have again
been engaged to teaeli the borough
schools for the coming term. This
will make the third consecutive
term that these efficient teachers
have been in charge <>f our schools.
Mrs. Marion Miller of near El
dredsville, died at her home on
Friday. July 2. she is survived
by a husband, J. E, Miller, and
three children.
Mr. J. V. Finkle, last week pre
sented lis with a branch from one
of his currant bushes which was
the finest of its kind that we hail
ever seen. The clusters of white
fruit hung so thick as to nearly
conceal the leaves, and were per
fect in size and color.
The newly organized ball team
of Laporte defeated Dushore by
the score of 13 to 7, last Thursday
It was a lively game with errors
on ceah side. Carpenter held the
strong batting team of Dushore to
five hits. With a little practice
Laporte will have one of the fast
est teams in the county.
Mrs. W. J. McCartney who with
her husband has been living near
the latter's saw mill about six
miles from Laporte, recently be
came violently insane. It has been
found necessary to take steps to
ward her removal to an asylun for
the insane.
A Kennett Square correspondent
to the West Chester News passed out
a very friendly compliment to our
new and much appreciated citizen,
Mr. Ladley, in the following item:
The new National Bank just start
in Laporte, Suliivan county, of which
our townsmen Charles J. Pen nock
and Edwin 8. Phillips are among
the directors, has chosen Edward
Ladley, of this borough as cashier.
Mr. Ladley who is a member of our
Borough Council and a most valu
able citizen, has moved his family to
Laport". Kennett's loss will cer
tainly be the latter's gain.
The efficacy of the bee sting for
rheumatism is being tried by Cap
tain John H. Law, a rich retired
Holidaysburg man, though involun
tarily. He went to his farm near
Holidaysburg to recover from an
attack of rheumatism, and while
walking through the field disturbed
a swarm of bees and was stung forty
three times.
