Mr. D. H. Lorali. proprietor of
the Lorah hotel at Sonestown,
on Friday last went to William
sport to be operated on for an ab
scess in his side. Mr. Lorah has
been in very poor health since last

A man. whose name could not
be learned, was placed under arrest
at Jamison City, Thursday, having
been caught with fifteen trout un
der size and five over the limit in
number, by a State policeman dis
guised as a woodsman.

mister of Bingham ton, are spend
ing a few days with the flatter's
mother, Mrs. Cheney, at lier home
in this place. Mr. Edmister is
having the Cheney house remodeled
and painted which will add great
ly to the appearance of the dwell
ing. Mr. and Mrs. Edmister will
return later in the season to spend
the summer season at Laporte.
Mr. Clayton Dunham resumed
work on Monday clearing and
grading the Borough park. A
large force of men are engaged in
the work and the general appear
ance of the grounds already has
developed into marvelous attract
iveness. A considerable amount
of money has been expended foi'
this worthy improvement, and the
heretofore hidden beauty lifts been
forced to reveal its delightful land
scape beauty under the artistic
hand of Mr. Dunham, and the
persistent efforts of the Village
Improvement Society. When a
more desirable walk has been laid
around the park and the ground
covered with natures velvet sword
the park will be nothing less than
a dream of beauty.
Interperters of foreign languages
in the Northumberland county court
have struck for an increase of £I.OO
per day in their wages. They sire
now receiving $5,00. The demand
was not granted and in consequence, •
the foreign cases listed have been

Monday from his visit to Woodstock,

by the illness of his brother who is
now reported out of danger.
William Henry Strope son of Mr.
and Mrs. William Strope, of Berniee.
died Sunday of Diphtheria at the
age of 8 years. This is the second
death in the family within ten days,
of Diphtheria. Another child is sick
witu the same disease. Mr. and
Mrs. Strope have the sympathy of
the community in their sad bereave
ment.
Charles Shock, of Lopez, died
May I-, at the age of 70 years. Mr.
Shock was justice of the jxa-e at
Lopez for a number of years and
was highly respected. The remains
were takeu to Colley for interment.'

tectors to investigate conditions a
to drunkenness in the municipality
and then to mail to all licensed
liquor dealers a notice to desist from
selling liquor to any resident 01

of his license for the third oflense.
The sale of liquor to habitual
drunkards has long been a breach of

Cost of Oiling Roads.
A recently published report of the
Boston park commission is interesting

more than forty miles was treated in
this way. Mr. Putnam, the engineer,
has carefully calculated the cost, and
he says that the annual cost of sprin
kling a thirty foot roadway was sisti
a mile, whereas the cost of oiling the
same roadway thirty feet wide was
$375 In addition to laying the dust,
the asphaltum In the oil had a binding
effect on the surface of the road and
very materially lessened the cost fnr
repairs. The oil Is put on In an einul
sion in which fifteen pounds of soap
dissolved In fifty gallons of water are
mixed with a hundred gallons of crude
oil, the whole being agitated to the
proper point of emulsion, and then 130'
gallons df this are mixed with 400 gal

roads. The plan has given the very
best satisfaction in Poston and might
lie tried elsewhere with corresponding
ly satisfactory results.
