The County Commissioners inet at their office Friday receiving bids for the construction of an iron bridge over Mud Run near Shunk. The contract was awarded to the Mon tour Steel company of Montour Falls N. Y. for the sum of $779.00. The bridge is to be 61ft. long and 12 lee* clear for road way The contract calls for completion by January 80, 100S. The cost of this bridge is considt red the lowest of any similar bridge ever constructed in Sullivan county. Our Commissioners merit congrat ulations for their success in secur ing so good a bargain. Two vagrants traveling through Laporte Wednesday morning took posession of Atty. F. H. Ingham's gun which was left .standing on the front porch of his home, while he was making preparations for a hunt. When finding the gun miss ing he discovered tracks in the snow of two persons passing the house, one of whom stepped to the porch and removed the gun. Ipon making inquiry he learned that the tramps had been in town soliciting their morning meal, and found they were headed in the direction of Sonestown. Constable N. C. Ma ben WF.S sent in pursuit, and ar rived at the Muncy Valley station just as the men were about to take their departure over the mountain. Mr. Maben approached the men and informed them of his business. The man carrying the gun handed it to the constable, remarking, "If you get me you will have to take mo dead," aud ran for the woods. The constable being alone and having one man captive desired to hold 011 to what he had. and did not follow in pursuit. A shot or was fired into the air but the fugi tive did not heed them and was soon out of Bight. After the cause of the excitement had become known about Muncy Valley, men and boys were soon pursuing the robber but asjjuight came had not been overtaken aud is still at large. The captured youth was brought to the county jail where he awaits the action of the law. His name in Walter Fair and is seventeen years of age. Maynard Deal, his companion who stole the gun is 22 years of age. Both are from St. Marys, and were looking for work. 'Their object for stealing the gun was to sell it and raise money to help defray traveling expenses. That (lie Pennsylvania Railroad Company will "loosen up" ami spend five million of dollars in dam ming the Juniata river, rutting away a mountain and building a power plant for the electrification of the system at a point, near Lewis town, is partly confirmed l>y practi cal railroad men interviewed in llarrishurg, who admit that within the next six years such :t thing as a steam locomotive will not he seen on the Pennsylvania rai road in this State. Information came to Hurrisburg, that the lieiter, Curtis and Hill, H. S. KLerbaugh and Charles Simms, the biggest railroad contractors of this country were bidding on con tract for improvements at Lewis town that would involve five mil lion dollars. Estim ites for various improve ments necessary along the line ol Pennsylvania railroad have all been turned into the Philadelphia office and appropriations of money to be spent next year will not he made un til after January 1, 1909. Men connected with these three big contracting concerns who have been active for some time about Lewistown, have let slip sufficient information to justify the belief that the railroad company has gi gantic plans for improvements at Lewistown. It has been planned for several years to eliminate a big curve in the line at Lewistown near a point where tlio proposed dam is to be built In the Juniata. At that point there is considerable of a full ill the river and men up in hydraulics claim that sufficient power could be generated there by damming the river to supply a division of the sys tem with electricity. It is claimed that the scheme to eliminate the curve by tearing down a portion of the mountain there is for economic purposes as the stone blasted from the mountain would be utilized partly in the construction of the dam and for tilling-in purposes at the point where the power plant is to be located.
