Mr. Charles Cheney and daught er, Mrs. Harry Dieli'enderfer, spent a 112 15W hours of Saturday in town. Mrs. J. A. Roberts and Miss Maria Emig did shopping in On shore one day last week. The gunning season has few day-> to run yet, and it may be said all the gunners have n> t been killed. Messrs, W. M. Cheney of .New York City, and Warren Watrous of Johnsoiiburg, arrived in town Saturday evening and on Monday morning shouldered their guns and started for the wilds of Sullivan county with the expectation of bagging some big game. A farmers' institute will be held at Muncy Valley, December IS and 10. A splendid program lias been prepared, and the agricultu ral people of the county should not fail to attend this institute. The Hugheaville mail ot last week says that a sportsman of that place while hunting for pheasants in Sullivan county, got filled with bird shot by one of his companions. He was not seriously injured but was kept quite busy for a time picking bird shot out of his skin. A pretty home wedding was solemnized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Burke in Laportc Township on Thursday evening, Xov. 12th., when their daughter Miss Sylvia, was united in bonds of matrimony to Mr. H. K. Jones, of Laportc. The ceremony was per formed in the presence of a few in vited guests, by It,»v. lfert/. of Kones town. The News Item extends con gratulations. Transfer of the real estate of Mr. William Lowe was made on Friday [of last week to Mr. Clayton Wortli ington. The consideration was con siderable over 3,000. Mr. Lowe with his family will leave Sullivan county next month for the State of Washington where Mr. Lowe will engage in fruit growing. The Taft business boom through out the country since election has hit this town mighty hard. It is said with considerable truthfulness that it is an ill will that blows no good. So with Laporte, the wind has a habit of blowing pretty strong here, and the good if now brings seems to come with territlic force. Laporte is a town with a future. Bishop Henry Darlington, of the of the Episcopal Diocese of ITar risburg, on Friday evening <>f last week, k in St. John's Episcopal church of Laporte, confirmed a class comprised of the following persons: Mrs, Robert Mason. Mrs. T. W. Null. Misses Dolly Cross ley, Pearl Hunter, Ida Lovelace, Helen Carpenter, Mrs. Karl Wrede, and two young ladies from Nordmont. A quiet but none the less very pretty wedding took place when Mr. John L. Garland of Harris burg. and Miss Katharine Eliza beth Wrede were united in mar riage at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. E. E. Wrede, 011 Wednesday at noon. The cere mony was performed by Rev. D, E. S. Perry, of Coudersport, Pa. The bride and groom were attend ed by Attorney and Mrs. F. W. Meylert. The ceremony was wit nessed byonly the intimate friends and relatives of the young couple. A dainty wedding breakfast was served immediately after the cere mony. Mr. and Mis. Garland left on the evening train for a brief wedding tour after which they will begin housekeeping at H&rrisburg. The News Item with their many friends extend congratulations. Hunters Find $3,622 in Kettle. Oil City Pa., —Xov, li).—Edward Woods and Thomas Dickinson, lum bermen, employe'! at Heed's saw mill at Oleopolis, 12 miles east or hire, took a day oil' to bunt Rab bits yesterday and as a result are nearly SI,OOO richer. Incidentally scores of men are searching the hill sides near Oleopolis hoping to dupli cate the treas-ure discovered by woods and Dickinson. The two men were on the track ol' a rabbit which entered a hole While they were digging with the end of their guns they uncovered an iron kettle filled with bright gold coins. Woods and Dickinson hast ily lifted the kettle from the hole and found it contained *:!,(>00 in gold and 82:3 in silver. The men carried the kettle with its gold c'oin to the camp and exhib ited it to their fellow-workmen. Work was instantly suspended, the lumbermen together with drillers and pumpers from nearby oil leases, rushing to the spot indicated by woods -and Dickinson, about two miles from Oleopolis. < H«» time residents believe the money was buried by John Caldwell, an eccen tric farmer, who died in an insane asylum nearly thirty years ago. Court House Burned. Lebanon, Nov. 19.—Lebanon courthouse, which was built nearly 100 years ago, was practically de stroyed by tire last evening, entail ing a loss of at least SIO,OOO and practically necessitating an entirely new building. The lire started at "> o'clock, just after the clock on the tower had struck. The fire was caused by sparks from the painters lighted torch while they were paint ing the east side of the building. "Ambitious young men and ladies should learn telegraphy; for since the now 8-hour law became effect ive there is a shortage of many thousand telegraphers. The National Telegraph Institute of Philadelphia, Pa. and five other cities is operated under supervision of Rail Road officials and all students are placed when qualified.
