Hall Tuesday evening for the ben efit of the Athletic Association, was well patronized and proved a delightful affair, and was a success financially as well as socially. Nearly S3O was realized, and this will be used to pay the expense of grading and putting the athletic grounds in first class condition for this season. Miss Zora Carpenter attended the Alumni Banquet of the Dushore High School at that place Saturday evening. l'rof. Killgore is one of the board of examiners at the State Normal School, West Chester, Pa. Orders were received last week by the officials of the Laporte tan nery to have that structure board ed up this week. The work was commenced on Monday and the great machinery is now silent and will be for an indefinite period. Nearly all of the foreigners |who were employed in the tannery have moved elsewhere to seek employ ment. The Pennsylvania State College was chartered in 1S8">, and is making arrangements to suitably celebrated ts fiftieth anniversary the coming commencement. The institution was never before so flourishing. It has earned for itself a firm foothold among the most useful educational establishments in the State graves. Sonestown Lodge No 221, I. <>. (). The Veterans of LaPorte and vi cinity extend their heartfelt thanks to the choir, sunday schools and the public in general for their generous assistance in our Memorial Services and in decorating our fallen com rades. Win. W. Loch, Sec. One of the finest compliments we have over known paid to the great class of people called "farmers" is the plain statement of fact made by the staticiaiiH that although farmers form one-half of the population of our country, yet only two per cent of all crime is committed hy them. Criminality is a thing almost un known among the tillers of the soil. How proud one should he t«> he call ed a "good honest farmer'' when tin term relates not only to occup.it ion hut also to standing in society. Very interesting reading for tax payers is to he found in the indict ments against the l'otter County Commissioners. ()ne specification i th.it of paying #l7Oll fur bridge thai was ottered to the Sharon supervisor for another is that of knocking off five-sixths of a manufacturing company's assessment, and in anoth er case nine-tenths after ap| oil day. Among the general charges are con spiracy, letting public contracts for reward, defrauding and neglect of duty. It is gratifying to know that in several counties of that state the taxpaying worms have turned. One of the most brutal murder that was ever committed occured in Potter county Wednesday of last week when 21 year old C Brewster deliberately loaned a gun, walked three miles to where his step father was working and sent the load into his head, lie surrendered himself to the authorities and gave no excuse for his crime other than family troubles. A serious effort to shorten school hours for the relief of small children will be made hy the leading educa tors throughout the state. It is pro posed to reduce the hours of children in the first two years of primary in struction from Ave to three and a half hours. It is urged that such a reform is no less in the interests of the teachers than of the pupils, anil that the effectiveness of the schools would not be lessened. A glimpse of the country those days will do any man or woman good. Nature is arrayed in hcrniost beautiful apparel during the early spring days and it is one of the pleas ures of life to get close to her heart at times. Agricultural conditions all over the state are in good shape, accord ing to the weekly Climate and Crop i Bulletin. Wheat, rye, meadows and : pastures have made vigorous growth I and some rye is heading. Seeds | have germinated well. Nearly all. fruits bloomed abundantly and, with 1 a few local exceptions, promise a full average crop. It is reported that the construction of the Lairdsville trolly line, from Millville to Lairdsville, is being! pushed steadily ahead. It will bea through line from Blooirishurg and ; ; will go by way ofSonestuwn to reach Kagles .Mere. That tine old Democratic organ, i the lSloonisburg "Columbian", has ; become thoroughly disgusted with the corruption in its party in Colum bia County, where the Democrat, are in a majority, though gradually becoming fewer. It declares the I party "has reached its present con- i dition through the boodle system and through the perfidy of some of its trusted leaders." This is pretty dismal, but why not call in the Hon. William Trenton Creasy? He is a distinguished citizen of Columbia County who makes a speciality of re form. Encourage him to try his I specific on his own party in his own ; county.
