It con tinues to exist because it li;;s been mooting the wants of the farmers. Should It full to meet the wants of the farmers and their families the grange would either vanish entirely or give way to a different organisation that would moot existing needs Changing eonditions of civilization nr.' constantly bringing forward now wants. The luxuries of even ton years ago are now wanted—not always as luxuries, more frequently as necessa ries. I.ess than ten years ago free rural delivery of mall was enjoyed as a luxury by the few. Today it is on joyed by over 11i.500,000 people in rural distriots as a necessary factor to make farm life more satisfying. In which class shall we place life insur amce? ltusiness rules and custom are fast making life insurance another of the necessaries of our ago. .Policies are now treated as negotiable paper in the business world, and I hoy represent a definite form of property. If they were all put together it is estimated that policies, now in force would represent nearly $18,000,000,00(1. Policies in the old line companies number 18,000,000. while 5,000,000 members of fraternal orders have the balance. 1 presume that 55.000,000 of our population have an Interest in this property, as shown in the policies carried by one or more members of the family. Talk about co-operation! Ilero it is developed to the greatest success and having more money and people connected with it than any other private enterprise that 1 know anything about. Life insurance is increasing at a tre mendous rate. I will not risk t;> give the number of millions of dollars' worth of it that are said to be taken out in new insurance each week. It makes the capitalization of the trusts look small. Thousands of farmers are now carrying insurance. Many more want to do so. They want insurance that will bo within reach of their pocket books, safe and suited to their coiuli [ tions. The grange lias a chance to pro vide the medium for life insurance of such of its members as want to take It just as it has so suoi-essfully pro vided tiro insurance for them. Then it will no longer be necessary for fann ers to join other orders or to outside | of the grange to gel either form of insurance. Hut. like any commercial enterprise, this must be established oil a sound basis, have a simple, safe working plan and be intelligently directed local i l.v to insure its supremacy. The na tional grange in 1002 provided for a committee to take this subject up, but it is probable that its work will bo.only of a suggestive character. It has not been the policy of the national granue to itself conduct an enterprise. It can. however, blaze the way si that mem bers of the Order in different states and Pomona grange districts will be able to establish companies based upon such ideas and suggestions as are put out to the membership with the in dorsement of the national grange. \V.
