A lawsuit involving M\ ra Lewis lis plaintiff and Aaron Lewis as de fendant came before 'Squire Keeler's •ourt Tuesday which resulted in a lecisiou favorable to the defendant. This litigation was brought on through the loan of a sum of money tvhich became entangled with mis understanding and law complications is money often does when out on loans. Weather prophet, Emmor K.Sut ter of Media, Pa., whose prophecy for May li»th came true in the shape of a frost in various section of the State, has another venture to make, i little further ahead. He says that he is positive that there will be another frost on June 1:1 th, when the moon again changes "in the sign of the neck." He does not i-laim to have fore-knowledge of the velocity of the wind, and admits that his frost may miscarry or be made of little effect from that cause. Two more heathen foreigners of Bernicc were recently brought to the county seat and placed in jail to await trial, charged with assault and intent to kill one of their own tribe. With this depraved element engaged in mining at Bernicc, Sullivan coun ty will have to increase its jail capac ity and mortgage all its assetts to defray the constantly increasing ex penses created by the lawless element brought in the county to add wealth to mine operators. There has been an invention by which it will be possible to cross the Atlantic Ocean in three days, is the firm belief of Richard B. Painter a machinist of Williamsport. The machinery will all be run by electric ity. Arrangements are now being made for the building of a large steamer at New York, measuring six hundred feet, on which the in vention w ill first be tried. The Department of Public Instruc tion has complied the apportionment to the various school districts of the appropriation to the school fund for this year and will on the first Mon day of June begin the payment of the funds. At u meeting of State Live Stock Sanitary Board held on May 21, re ports were relieved relative to the investigation whieh is being con ducted by the board for the protec tion of cattle from tuberculosis by vaccination. State Veterinarian Dr. Leonard Pearson and Dr. S. 11. (iilland have l been conducting experiments in the j endeavor to ascertain whether cattle j can be immuned from the disease by means of vaccination. These experi ments have developed the fact that vaccinated cattle exposed for a year to daily contact with animals effect ed with the disease did not contract it while those which had not been vaccinated readily became affected. Calves of infected cows are now be ing vaccinated and left with their diseased mothers. They are allowed to use the parent milk for the pur pose of ascertaining whether vaccin ation will approve all'ective under these conditions. It is generally conceded that unvaccinated calves raised with cattle infected with tub erculosis contract the diseace. The public school teachers' minim um salary law, enacted by the last legislature, goes into effect on the first of June next. A thorough can vass of every county in tin' state shows that :i,BOO school teachers, over nine-tenth of them women, will receive substantial increase in salary during the coming term as the result of the operation of the law. Nearly $750,0(111 as additional remuneration will he received by the teachers dur ing the next term as the result of this increase. 1 n nine-tenths of the districts there will he no increases of taxation on this account. The law provides that after the first day of June, the minimum sal ary of the teachers shall be s.'}"> per month. It is made the duty of the president and secretary of each school district in the state, under oath to make report to the Superintendent of Public Instruction that the requi rements of law have been fully com plied with. The last section provides that "every school district of the commonwealth, failing to comply with the requirement of this act, shall forfeit its state appropriation for the whole time during which this act has been violated. A western man was recently tried for assault and battery with intent to kill. The state brought into court of the weapons used, a rail, ax, gun, a pair of tongs, saw and rifle. The defendent's counsel exhibited as the other man's weapons a scythe, pitchfork, pistol, dog, razor and hoe. 'fhe jury decided the case as follows: "We, the jury, would have, given a dollar to have seen the light." Mr. Irvin Died in Williamsport- Mr W. 11. Irvin, the well-known temperance lecturer, and who has been heard in lectures several times in Laporte, was taken ill suddenly last Thursday, since which time his i mind has been a blank. While driving through wildwood , cemetery seated in a buggy by the! side of his wife, Mr. Irvin after an uncommonly long silence, jumped from the vehicle and without utter- j ing a word, commenced to disrobe! himself. Mis wife induced him to j ■ return to the buggy and drove home I where with the assistance of some ' men who responded to her call,!' managed to get her husband into the 1 house. Later he was taken to the hospital where it was found necesMi ry to strap him to the bed to prevent him from doing injury to himself.
