There is much talk of political
hossisin in Pennsylvania, and of the
grip whic.li Col. Quay holds upon the
party.
This topic is the subject of frequent
denunciations from the Democratic
ranks. Hut taking recent event as
the model Democratic denunciations
of Republican methods is a case of
the pot calling the kettle black.
The Pennsylvania Democracy re
cently went through the form of a
convention and among the points on
which it assailed the Republican par
ty was its obedience to liossism.
Now mark the appropriateness of
this wrath! Accusing the Republi
cans, of submitting to bossism the
Democratic Convention carried out
without kick or protest, the program
outlined by Col. Gutt'ey. Its dele
gates to the St. Louis Convention
are togo uninstructed and it is un
derstood that the latter, holding
them in his hand, will join a combi
nation to help the right man.
The Prohibitions of Sullivan held
t here County Convention at the Court

In the evening a large and appre
ciative audience greeted Rev. J. 11.

Jubilee Singers, at the Court House
who held the audience spell bound
for two hours.
The administration is losing no
time in its investigation of the alleg
ed combine of the meat packers to
monopolize the market. Secretaray
Cortelyou of the Department of Com
nicrce and Labor is gathering infor
mation at all necessary points to fur
nish the Department of Justice with
the evidence on which to institute
suit under the Sherman antitrust law
if such action is warrantable. Mr.
James R. Garfield, commissioner of
corporation has been quietly conduct
ing an inquiry at Chicago and did
abnndome that field until the packers
became cognizant of his presence and
operation. lie has returned to Wash
ington with a large collection of da
ta bearing upon the points included
in ifie resolution of Congress, and it
i« promised that if proceedings can
be sustained they will not be long
delayed.
