As previously advertised, the
County Commissioners setting as aj
Board of Revision of taxes are busy
at their office this week adjusting
and raising taxes throughout a great- i
|er portion of the county, where the j
| assessors failed to comply with their,
j orders in raising the valuation of,
\ property ten per cent. Had a kind-!
ergarten for county assessors been
established many years ago, it would j
not now be necessary to increase the
burden of taxation. If the Board of
Revision do not discriminate be

Miss Nora Caslebury and Efl'ie

The Rule to show cause why a
supersedeas should not issue in the
I matter of the appeal from the decree
iof the Court of (Quarter Sessions in
i corporating the borough of South
Laporte, was argued iu the Superior
Court at Williamsport on Wednes
day. E. J. Mullen and R. J. Thom
son appeared for the rule, and Thos.
J. Ingham and Herbert T. Ames
against" it. The opinion of the court
I was reservei 1. It was decided by
the court that the heading on the
I appeal should be advanced and
heard at Pittsburg early iu May.
Neighbor Streby, of the Gazette,
give us your ■&-. We thank you
for informing your readers that the
property of the Elk Tanning company
in Laporte Borough is worth more
i than property of all the citizens in
the borough. You have no doubt
been correctly informed of these facts
j by some one who knows the value of
the tannery property. Competent
'men here estimate that it is worth
I two hundred thousand dollars,
j Now neighbor Streby, will you
kindly tell your readers that this
valuable tannery property has, dur
ing the past three years, been assess
ed for less than sixteen thousand
dollars. Tell them also that the
valuation of Laporte borough for the
present year, as advertised by the
Commissioners is $59,942, while the
tannery property is assessed at abotit
eighteen thousand dollars. The
property of the citizens is assessed at
more than twice as much as the Elk
Tannery Company.
Take your own statements, neigh
bor Streby and you will see that the
Elk Tanning Company's assessment
should be raised to more than forty
thousand dollars. Can you tell your
readers what influences have enabled
this great corporation to keep down
its assessments and escape its fair
and equal taxation ? Are you will
ing to join with us in an effort to
have the Commissioners raise the
valuation of the property of the Elk
Tanning Company until it is in fair
. proportion to the valuation put upon
the property of the farmers and other
| citizens of the county ?
| Somebody has to do the dirty
| work. No matter to what degree of
refinement we may attain as a peo
j pie, that which we term the dirty
j disagreeable work of life can never
be eliminated or dodged. Somebody
must wash the dishes,do the family
washing,milk the cows,cleanout the
1 tarns. The very effort to be refined
1 and civilzed but makes more of this
I
dirty work to do. A type of ediu a
i tion which leads one to look con
temptuously upon and avoid,if pos
! sible, these omnipresent and dis
agreeable duties of lifeis defectiveto
j the core. That education which en-
I ables the possessor to do this sort of
, disagreeable work with true manly
and womanly dignity is of the rjght
kind. The true American is a man
not ashamed to de seen dressed in
waiuus and overalls.
A Clinton county man named
Moon married a girl named Shine
and somebody said that it was all
! moonshine,but it wasn't—it was a
change of the moon. A short time a
go his wife presented him with a
! young daughter, and that of course
was a new moon. Then he went to
town and got drunk for joy and !
that was a full moon. When he start-1
ed home he had only twenty-five i
cents in his pocket and that was the j
! last quarter. His mother-in-law met
him at the door with a rolling-pin
and then there was a total eclipse,
and he saw stars.
That it doesn't pay to die in Lan
j caster county can be gathered from
; a special from there,which reads as
I follows: At the funeral of Abrain
i(I, Shelly of Ralpho township, Sa
turday, over 1200 relatives and fri
| ends were present, and fully 000 re
i turned to the home of the deceased
I for dinner.
i When you get a catlaogue from a
! big mail order house, just look it
( over and see what they will pay you
j for your produce,also investigate
j and see what their terms of credit
| are in case you do not have the
! ready cash; how much they will
i 1 give towards the keeping up of the
! sidewalks; just write them and ask
how much they will give towards
the erection of a church; how much
they will give to assist the poor.
After you have done this and re
-1 cieved a reply, see if your home
merchant won't do as well.
