On Monday night, at Canton, oc
cured a shooting episode in which
Edward Watkins, colored, was shot
through the right lung by Charles
Decker, a white man. The trouble
was one of long standing, and both
were intoxicated at the time the
shooting was done. It is thought
that Watkins will recover.

Miss Myrtle Edgar of Sonestown,

A farmer living near Itohrsburg, i
•Columbia county, has a monstrosity
in the shape of a calf. This animal
has the head of a calf while its body ]
has all of the appearance of being j
that of an elephant. The body is j
full and clumsy and with all the;
characteristics of his larger Jherbivo- J
rous friend. The tail is also the |
very image of that of the beast that
carries his trunk with him, and at
the first glance at the animal not
happening to see its head, one's first
impulse would be to call the brute
an elephant. The animal is now
quite large, being about three
months old, ant! is highly prized by
its owner. All the residents in that
district have been to see the freak,
and all are of the opinion that it is
worth going miles to look at.

J. M. Zaner, last week, moved his
household goods from this place to
Ricketts, where he will occupy the
Ricketts Hotel. Although a temper
ance house it has for a number of
years held the reputation of being
the best place for good meals in
Wyoming county. With the pres
ent occupants in charge there is no
duubt this excellent reputation will
be maintained.
Sullivan County has every reason
to feel proud since the Hughesville
Fair of last week, as it was then
proved that for handsome babies and
popular men Sullivan is in the front
ranks. The Fair's prize for the
handsomest baby present at the Fair
and which consisted of a handsome
baby carriage, was awarded to the
infant child of Mr. and Mrs. T. J.
Shug of Muncy Valley, and the prize
offered for the most popular man in
the employ of the W. & N. B.
Railroad Company, which was a
handsome lantern, was awarded
to Conductor Starr of the Fagles
Mere railroad. It is hard to under
stand how the judges were able to
reach a decision in the latter case as
there are so many genial and popu
lar employes in the service of the
W. A- N. B. railroad, nevertheless,
we extend congratulations _to Con
ductor Starr.
M. C. M. Duryea, inspector of the
postofflce department, was at New
Albany on Wednesday making an
examination of the affairs of the
postofflce at that place. As the
continuation in offlce of the present
postmaster depends upon the exami
nation, there is much interest in the
announcement of the result. The
postofflce has been in charge of the
deputy postmaster of late. It is said
that the bondsmen hold a note for
#203, given by the postmastar's wife,
to cover the amount that her hus
is alleged to be short in his accounts.
It is said that his friends will putin
a plea of insanity or irresponsibility
against the charge of misconduct in
the office. He has been drinking
heavily for some time past and at
times acted like a man mentally un
balanced.
Happy is the man or woman who
has the faculty of making a pleasure
out of their work and thus getting
their support as well as their enjoy
ment at the same time and from the
same source. Unhappy on the con
trary is he or she who goto their
work like a galley slave, sorry when
they commence, glad only when
they end. Skill, too, in knowing
how to do things in the best way is
a very valuable accomplishment.
Many people do their work in the
wrong way. They try to cut grain
with dull tools, "pull off more than
they can chew," in the way of land
to be tilled, fail to "grease the
wheels" and otherwise manage to
make their work doubly hard. As
it is only the well oiled machinery
that runs smoothly, so the friction of
life may be greatly lessened by doing
all things at the right time and in
the right place.
