A petition is being circulated in
Davidson township which is receiv
ing the names of all the prominent
tax payers, asking the court to ap
point a township treasurer to serve
until such time as one may be elect
ed. Heretofore the road supervisors
and overseers of poor have handled
the funds—drawing and cashing
their own orders. This manner of
business transaction was thought to
be less expensive as it saved a treas
urer's commission, but with the ex
perience Davidson has had with this
method there is found to be no econ
omy in it. Accounts in several in
stances have been poorly kept in
past years and transactions between
collectors and various officials have
been unevenly devided and resulted
in unpleasant circumstances. Law
suits have been instituted and books
presented in evidence have of neces
sity been ruled out owing to their
deficient character and the conse
quence following is a shifting of
blame for shortage of funds and no
one is punished for the injustice done
to the taxpayers. In this manner
Davidson has lost hundreds of dol
lars and expended large sums in
lawsuits. A competent and reliable
treasurer for Davidson would be a
money saver to those who pay the
taxes, and the more progressive ones
are making a strong effort to have it
brought about.
