Saturday was Excursion day over the W. &. N. B. Eight hundred peo ple from along the line were taken to llarveys Lake. And a large Ex cursion train from the L. V.was taken to Eagles Mere. Victor C. Hugo has left the "Herald." Victor was a good man and gave the Herald good service. With his retirement the paper loses 99 per cent of its decency, some say more. What Mr Carroll will do for the paper remains to be seen. We shall place dependence in future 011 that weather prophet who recently predicted that it would rain every day for forty days as the indications of the past week or so were of a nature to verify his predictions. We are pleased to inform our renders that another progressive and up-to-date farmer of Western Sull ivan has followed the suggestion made by the News Item, that farm ers name their homes, as Mr. (>eo. Mown of Lincoln Falls informs us that 11 is farm has been named "The Fairview Stock Farm," a very at tractive and appropriate name. The W. &N. B. R. R. Co. had a number men at work last week put ting in a new switch to the Bernice Coal mine culm Iwvnk. Mr Alex Buhb of Hughesville had charge of the construction. It is said that a further line of rails will be laid in the near future and a better mode of getting out the coal at the An thracite breaker near Lopez will l»e effected. S. W. Stephens left here Sunday for Proctor to join the German Medicine Show. No doubt but "Shorty" will be a valuable ad junct to the show's entertaining features. His recent ballad 011 the "Striking Miners" will be used with good effect without a doubt. John J. Webster met with a very painful accident last Friday while driving down the steep hill between the first and second ward. A portion of the harness broke which frightened the horse and be fore he could get the animal under control, was thrown from the wag on and badly injured about the I head and shoulders. The horse ran to the tannery where it was caught with 110 damage to itself. Mr. Webster has been under the doctor's care since the accident occured. Since Victor Hugo's retirement from the Herald, tliere has been much speculation as to the cause. We were informed from a reliable source that Victor had too much respect for himself to continue in doing Soouten's dirty work and being conscious of a hereafter, him self, could no longer tolerate the methods of his partner. Others say that the Herald's earnings were too meager to maintain life. Of the latter we can speak with some assurance of its correctness. The reason of it is plain. In order to draw patronage from its competi tors it took job work ami advertis ing at a ridiculously low rate. The auditors of LaPorte Twp. must admit having had such privileges with the Herald, and there are hun dreds of others. But then every one will get what they deserve, in this earthly sphere or in the apirtual one. Don't worry. Marriage License Granted. Mr. John L. Stevens and Miss Ida Molyneux, both of Elblaiul Twp. Mr. and Mrs. Russel Karns of Benton, visited Laporte friends Saturday and Sunday. The second Quarterly Confer ence of the M. E. Church will be held at Cherry (Jrove next Friday evening at 8. P. M. Presiding Elder Black will be in charge of the service and preach the Sacramental ser mon. The Young Ladies of the M. E, Church will hold an Ice Cream Soc ial on J. V. Finkle's lawn next Saturday evening. All are invited to come and enjoy the refresh ments. NOTICE.— A meeting of lot own ers and all citizens interested in the proper care and keeping of Mt. Ash Cemetery will be held in the courthouse, Saturdry evening, August 2, at 8 o'clock, for the pur pose of forming a cemetery asso ciation Now Scouten has pitched into "Billy" Shoemaker. It seems that the republicans are not running the party to suit Scouten. Now, that's too bad. It looks to a man outside the democratic party as if Scouten had plenty to do if he spent his remaining energies in running his own party. One year ago Scouten thought he had the cinch on the democratic party, and could do what lie pleased, but the result did not justify his assurance. lie was not successful in landing a single candidate. His three men were Walsh, McCarty, and Craft. If he makes his slate go this year he will have to spend less time try ing to manage the republican party. Agents and peddlers are more numerous than seventeen year lo custs. Things good, bad and in different all come the way of the busy housewife. Here are patent can openers, cherry seeders. Here are carpet rugs and silver (?) ware sold at a sacrifice to the customer. The customer usually makes the sacrifice. Some really good, labor saving devices are sold and some things, after the first trial will be relegated to the trash l»ox never to l>e used again. There are worthy people who deserve patron age, and there are good articles and labor-saving devices which may sometimes be purchased of them, but many a good housewife has discovered, after paying a good round price to an agent, that the same article could have lieen pur chased of a local dealer for a small er sum. After all, our local deal ers are people who help pay the taxes and who really help the com munity in every way and they should have the preference. The money paid to them remains in the community and helps to run our churches and our schools and to promote the public wellare. In time of panic or sickness our local dealers are with us and the credit they extend helps many families over a financial barrier. Where! are the strange agents then? Gone like the chaff before the wind, and no oneknoweth their place of habi> tation. Stand by your local mer chant, read the ads. in your local paper to see who he is; stand by him in your prosperity, and in your ' adversity he will not forsake you. Republican County Convention.
